It was aces wild on August 15, as Jacob Misiorowski and Sonny Gray were both excellent on the day for their respective teams. But if there was one player who truly the show from the 15th, it was Joshua Baez.
Baez has historic debut
The Cardinals promoted outfield prospect Joshua Baez, the Triple-A home run leader, on August 15. And how did he respond? With history.
Baez hit a two-run shot off Matthew Boyd in the first inning, which put the Cardinals up 1-0 after St. Louis scraped one on the board via an RBI force out. But Baez wasn’t done there, as he hit two more home runs in his following two at-bats, becoming the first MLB player to hit a homer in his first three at-bats.
The Cardinals, who won 8-4, weren’t done yet. Alec Burleson hit a solo shot off Boyd in the sixth, and Blaze Jordan hit one off Colin Rea in the eighth.
Brewers shut down Dodgers
Jacob Misiorowski was in fine form in Dodger Stadium. The NL Cy Young hopeful pumped 104 MPH heat multiple times to Shohei Ohtani to start the game, a precursor to what was a strong six-inning performance for the right-hander.
Misiorowski allowed just one earned run over those six innings, striking out six. He bested Justin Wrobleski, who allowed two two-run home runs, one to Joey Ortiz and the other to William Contreras.
The Brewers won 4-1 to earn at least a split of their four-game series with the Dodgers.
Gray silences Pirates
Sonny Gray continued his own AL Cy Young push, as he struck out seven over seven scoreless innings to win his 15th game of the season. The Red Sox shut out the Pirates 4-0 in Pittsburgh.
Boston’s offense didn’t get much through eight, as the only run scored up until the ninth was via Wilyer Abreu‘s 22nd home run of the season. But off Luke Weaver in the ninth, Andruw Monasterio drove in two with a double. Jahmai Jones hit a single that drove in Monasterio later that frame.
Orioles win in extras
The American League playoff race has been interesting this year, as there’s a real shot that a club with a below-.500 record can make it into October. Both the Orioles and Blue Jays are vying to be in that company.
Baltimore won 4-3 on the 15th, pushing the Orioles to within striking distance of a spot.
Yet again, the Rays made a late push. Down two in the sixth, Cedric Mullins drove in Liam Hicks with an RBI triple. And in the ninth, a Junior Caminero single scored Jorge Mateo to tie the game.
In the tenth inning, Tyler O’Neill drove in Colton Cowser.
Blue Jays defeat Yankees
On a bullpen day for the Blue Jays, Toronto allowed one run and picked up 10 hits in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees.
The newcomers stole the show, as Brett Bateman and Charles McAdoo each had two hits.
