August 25 marked the start of several big series. Two first-place teams in the National League, the Dodgers & Braves, matched up in Atlanta. The Astros, meanwhile, started their one-week trip in New York with three against the rival Yankees. And in the first game, the Astros came out on top.
Astros re-take first in AL West
The Astros won 9-7 to take the club’s first game in New York against the Yankees.
Daulton Varsho haunted the Yankees, as he picked up two hits and two RBI. His second RBI tied it at three in the fifth, before Luis Garcia Jr. drilled his 27th home run of the season to make it 5-3 New York. Jeremy Pena tied it with a two-run shot, and Garcia Jr. hit an RBI double to make it 6-5 in the seventh.
Yainer Diaz, who homered previously in the game, hit his second shot in the eighth to tie it at six. Yordan Alvarez broke the tie with an RBI triple, and Isaac Paredes drove him in for the game-winning run.
Texas, after Jacob deGrom surrendered six in the first, lost to the White Sox. Meaning, for now, the Astros move back to first in the AL West.
Braves take first game against LA
After the Braves went up 3-0, the Dodgers slowly chipped away at the lead and ultimately tied it. However, the Braves won it 4-3, taking the first game of their series in Atlanta.
Ozzie Albies was responsible for driving in the game-winning run, as he drove in Matt Olson with an RBI single in the eighth.
Dylan Dodd picked up the win, and Raisel Iglesias notched his 28th save of the season.
Red Sox win in extras
The Red Sox defeated the Marlins 7-3 in 11 innings.
Mickey Gasper, who’s been on a tear over the past week, hit two more home runs, his second putting the Sox up 2-1 in the sixth. Heriberto Hernandez‘s 20th home run of 2026 in the sixth tied it. And then, things got interesting.
A passed ball in the top of the 10th scored Connor Wong to make it 3-2 Boston. In the bottom half, a wild pitch on a strike three to Javier Sanoja scored Brian Navaretto to tie it once more. But in the 11th, Jarren Duran hit a grand slam to give the Sox a cushion.
Alonso paces Orioles
It was all O’s on August 25, as the Orioles won 13-1 over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Leody Taveras, Dylan Beavers, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand each had two hits, while Jackson Holliday had three out of the leadoff spot. Pete Alonso, meanwhile, had four, one of which was his 31st home run of the season. Alonso drove in four for Baltimore.
Chris Bassitt struck out five and allowed one run over 6.2 innings, earning his fifth win.
Pirates shut out Padres
The Pirates defeated the Padres 1-0 in San Diego.
Paul Skenes pitched well, as he tossed six scoreless innings. Michael King struck out seven over scoreless innings, matching Skenes.
No runs were scored until the ninth, when Oneil Cruz hit a solo home run off Mason Miller. Gregory Soto picked up the win, while Mason Montgomery notched his sixth save.
