Several players hit milestones on September 6, only part of the news from across the day. The Padres won the series with the Yankees, Miami picked up a win to keep pace with Arizona & San Diego, and the Guardians picked up another theatrical win over the Tigers.
Padres best Yankees
The Padres kept pace with the Diamondbacks, who won on the 6th, with a 4-3 victory over the Yankees.
Yankees starter Gerrit Cole gave up four home runs in this one, three of which came in the first. Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Jake Cronenworth went back-to-back off Cole in the first. Luis Campusano added a solo shot in the seventh.
Former Yankee Michael King didn’t allow a run over six innings. Adrian Morejon nearly let the game get away from him after he allowed three runs (two earned) in an inning. Mason Miller struck out the side in the ninth for his 33rd save of the year.
Guards take down Tigers
The Guardians won on another walkoff, defeating the Tigers 3-2 in extra innings.
Gavin Williams struck out 11 over six innings for Cleveland. However, Riley Greene hit a two-run double in the first to give the Tigers an early lead. Travis Bazzana cut the lead to one with an RBI double in the first. In the fifth inning, Brayan Rocchio tagged with the Tigers for a solo shot. And in the tenth inning, Daniel Schneemann drove in Angel Genao with an RBI single.
With that victory, coupled with a Blue Jays loss, Cleveland returned to the third AL Wild Card spot.
Orioles fall again to Boston
Over the last week, the Orioles have faded in the AL Wild Card race. That fall continued on the 6th, as the Red Sox defeated the Orioles 3-1.
Rookie Payton Tolle was excellent, as the left-hander struck out 12 and allowed just one run over six innings against Baltimore. Eli White provided Boston with all of the run production, as he belted a three-run home run off Kyle Bradish in the second inning.
Aroldis Chapman notched his 33rd save of the season, and the 400th of his career.
Miami picks up win to stay alive
The Marlins have slowly slipped down the ladder in the NL Wild Card race. Miami was able to get back to .500 with a 10-3 win over the Cubs.
Owen Caissie, Javier Sanoja, Joe Mack, and Heriberto Hernandez each drove in two runs. Otto Lopez had two hits and also stole his 30th base of the season in the win.
As for the Cubs, the big highlight of the day was Pete Crow-Armstrong hitting his 40th home run of the year. He became the first Cub since Derrek Lee to hit 40 home runs in a single season. Lee accomplished that feat in 2005.
Skenes excellent versus Angels
It’s been an up-and-down season for Paul Skenes this year. While Skenes only struck out two batters on September 6, he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory for the Pirates.
The lone run of the game came by way of a Henry Davis solo home run.
Walbert Urena struck out four in a complete-game for the right-hander.
