There were just five games contested on September 10, a very light day of MLB action after most teams were in action on Labor Day. However, all five games had some playoff significance. Atlanta took down the Rays, the Yankees head into the weekend with a win, while the Rangers failed to keep pace with the Astros.
Braves rally late
In a matchup of pitch-to-contact arms, Nick Martinez and Martin Perez held it scoreless for much of the Rays/Braves game on the 10th. Three runs by Atlanta late gave the Braves a 3-1 win.
With no score in the bottom of the eighth, Austin Riley drove in Ozzie Albies with an RBI single to break the deadlock. Later that inning, Ha-Seong Kim burned his old team with a two-run single. Victor Mesa Jr. homered in the ninth to get the Rays on the board.
Didier Fuentes won his sixth game, while Raisel Iglesias notched his 32nd save.
Mariners deal blow to Rangers
Seattle won 4-3 to push the Rangers down to three back in the AL West, as Houston won their game against the Phillies earlier in the day.
Joc Pederson hit a two-run shot in the third to start the scoring. Nicky Lopez made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the fifth. Jacob deGrom, meanwhile, struck out 12 over six scoreless. However, the bullpen didn’t hold it.
Dominic Canzone cut the lead to two with an RBI single in the seventh. Then, later that inning, Julio Rodriguez hit a three-run home run off Jakob Junis to make it 4-3.
Volpe shines in return
The Yankees won 10-3 over the Rockies, finishing out the series with a win.
Luis Garcia Jr. hit his 30th home run of the season. Spencer Jones had three hits, and so did Anthony Volpe. Volpe, who was recalled earlier in the day, hit a home run and drove in five runs for the Yankees.
