It was a great day for the Rangers on September 19, as Texas defeated the Blue Jays to move into first in the AL West once more. Houston fell to the Braves, who moved one step closer to locking up the NL West. And speaking of the NL playoff race, the D-Backs kept their hopes alive thanks to a walk-off against the Yankees.
Houston falls to Atlanta again
The Braves took the season series from the Astros on September 19, as Atlanta won 6-3 over Houston in a game that the latter needed badly.
Houston was up 2-0 through five thanks to five shutout innings from Hayden Wesneski, plus a home run and RBI single from Isaac Paredes. Atlanta cut the lead to one in the sixth thanks to Matt Olson. One inning later, Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his 20th home run of the year, a grand slam, to turn the tide.
Mike Yastrzemski added another run with a solo shot in the eighth inning.
Rangers take down Jays
The Rangers won 6-2 over the Blue Jays, dealing Toronto another big blow. But on top of that, it moved Texas back into first in the AL West race.
Thanks to an injury to Cal Quantrill, reliever Jordan Montgomery had to cover 3.2 IP and did so without allowing a run. Texas’ offense did the job, as Josh Jung hit a home run and scored two runs. Wyatt Langford drove in one and scored two runs.
With that loss, the Blue Jays are now three games back of the final AL Wild Card spot.
Arizona picks up a massive win
Needing to keep pace with the Cubs, Phillies, and Padres, the Diamondbacks won 5-3 over the Yankees.
New York, down 2-1 thanks to a Jordan Lawlar two-run triple in the fifth, came back to take the lead after solo home runs from Heliot Ramos and Austin Wells. Arizona tied it in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
In the ninth inning, Pavin Smith hit a walk-off, two-run home run off Michael Fulmer.
Guardians score 12 against A’s
The Guardians won their 80th game of the year, defeating the Athletics 12-6.
Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez hit home runs in the first to make it 5-2, after the Athletics scored two earlier in the inning. Martinez had a fine day at the plate, as he picked up four hits and came a triple away from the cycle.
DeLauter, along with Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, and Jo Adell, had two hits.
Padres walk off Miami
The Padres passed the Phillies, moving into the second NL Wild Card spot, after defeating the Marlins 7-6 in extra innings.
Miami went up 3-0 and 5-1 in this game before the Padres put up three in the third to make it 5-4. One inning later, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 24th home run to tie it. Ty France broke the tie with an RBI double in the sixth. But in the ninth, Griffin Conine hit a pinch-hit solo home run off Mason Miller to tie it.
San Diego walked it off in the 10th with an RBI single from Ethan Salas.
