Thanks to pending inclement weather this weekend, there were two doubleheaders on a very busy final Friday of the 2026 MLB regular season. Plus, the Phillies & Rangers both lost, as did the Houston Astros.
Red Sox sweep Cubs in Boston
The Red Sox swept a doubleheader in Boston on September 25, necessitated by a nor’easter that will hit the New England/Mid-Atlantic area this weekend.
Chicago went up 3-0 in the second thanks to a two-run double from Miguel Amaya, one inning after Tyrone Taylor drove in Seiya Suzuki. But Boston chipped away, and eventually scored two in the seventh to make it 4-3. That secured the second AL Wild Card spot for the Sox.
In the second game, Brayan Bello & Jedixson Paez combined to shut the Cubs out 2-0. Wilyer Abreu notched a two-run double in the eighth to give Boston all the run support needed.
The third & final game of the series will be a neutral-site contest on September 27 in Tropicana Field.
Yankees, Orioles split DH
Also affected by the big storm, the Orioles & Yankees played a doubleheader in New York.
Baltimore won the first contest 10-2. Pete Alonso hit two more home runs, giving him 43 on the year, in the opener. Gunnar Henderson, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Colton Cowser, & Christian Franklin each had two hits.
It was almost all Yankees in the second game, as New York won 6-3, a game that looked closer on paper. Will Warren & the Yankees shut out Baltimore for six innings before the O’s scored one in the seventh & two in the ninth inning.
Rangers blown out in Minnesota
In a game that the Rangers needed, Texas lost 10-2 against the Twins.
Jacob deGrom allowed eight earned runs over four innings. He entered the second with a 2-0 lead before deGrom surrended six runs in that inning alone.
Joe Ryan struck out eight over six innings.
Phillies lose to Tampa
Freddy Peralta kept the Phillies off the board, helping Tampa Bay win 2-0. It also meant that the Phillies were unable to reduce their magic number (it sits at two).
Jonny DeLuca drove in one with an RBI single in the first inning. One inning later, Nick Fortes hit a solo home run.
Cristopher Sanchez struck out 10 over seven innings.
White Sox in record-setting game
Sean Burke struck out seven, helping the White Sox defeat the Rockies 6-1.
Munetaka Murakami had three hits, two of which were home runs to give him 35 on the season. Sam Antonacci also had three hits. Colson Montgomery went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, which gave him 224 to set a new MLB record for most in a single season.
However, the White Sox did not gain ground in the AL Central. Cleveland won to stay head of Chicago by a game.
