The 28th of April marked the start of new eras for several teams. Don Mattingly officially took over as interim manager for the Phillies, while the Guardians welcomed Travis Bazzana for his MLB debut. Here’s how things shook out across the league on the day.

Phillies pitch shutout

The Phillies won 7-0 on April 28, the team’s first game under interim manager Don Mattingly. Mattingly took over after Rob Thomson was fired.

Jesus Luzardo had his best outing of the season, with a 34.8% Whiff% and eight strikeouts over seven shutout innings. He only gave up two hits in the victory.

Trea Turner led the offense with four hits.

Rays take sixth straight

Nick Martinez tossed seven shutout innings for the Rays, who shut out the Guardians 1-0 in Cleveland. It was the Rays’ sixth consecutive win.

Tampa’s bullpen had to hold off the Guardians late but the story was Martinez, who lowered his ERA to 1.70 ERA in the win.

Travis Bazzana, who made his MLB debut on the 28th, walked twice but has yet to pick up his first big league hit.

Burns sensational

Chase Burns struck out nine over six innings to notch his third victory for the Reds on the 28th. Burns and the Reds won 7-2, as Cincinnati is now 19-10 on the year.

Burns led all of MLB in total swings-and-misses on the day with 22, giving him a cumulative Whiff% of 40% for the day.

Spencer Steer and Elly De La Cruz homered in the win. De La Cruz now has 10 home runs on the season.
