Weeks after the 2026 MLB season concluded, the Los Angeles Angels made a decision on manager Kurt Suzuki. After one season with the club, he’s out. Plus, three more Minor Leaguers elected free agency within the last week.
Suzuki out as Angels manager
Los Angeles (AL) officially announced that Kurt Suzuki would not be retained as club manager for 2027. The club also noted that Suzuki was offered a chance to stay in the organization as a special assistant to the front office.
Suzuki was hired in October 2025 on a rare one-year deal for a manager, although that deal did come with an option that was obviously not picked up. Now, John Mozeliak will have the chance to pick his own manager, months after he took over as the head of the Angels’ front office.
Overall, it was not a good year for the Angels. Los Angeles finished with a 62-100 record, worst in the American League by two games.
Whoever takes that job will be the fifth to have it since 2020. The Angels become the third team in the Majors to have a managerial vacancy. Oddly enough, all three teams are in the AL West.
Now-former Mariners manager Dan Wilson was let go after the 2026 season concluded for Seattle in late September. On October 14, Houston announced that Joe Espada would not be retained.
More players go to free agency
After the conclusion of the Championship Series, three more previously-outrighted players went to free agency.
Ben Rortvedt, in the Dodgers’ system, elected free agency. Connor Brogdon and Carlos Hernandez, both with the Guardians, did so on October 20.
