April 3 was Opening Day, part two for many Major League teams. The Nationals, Pirates, Tigers, Twins, and Guardians were among the many to start their home schedules off on the day. And, many of those teams came out on top.
More home openers
Many teams had their home openers on April 3.
The Nationals lost 13-6 to the Dodgers in their first game at Nationals Park. Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Tucker each hit their first home runs of the regular season. Tucker’s shot was his first with the team.
Framber Valdez struck out five, and Dillon Dingler went yard for the Tigers, who shut out the Cardinals 5-0.
Eury Perez struggled at Yankee Stadium, as he walked six and gave up a home run to Aaron Judge in the first inning. Six strikeouts from Will Warren helped the Yankees defeat the Marlins 8-2.
Boston won 5-2 against San Diego. Willson Contreras hit his first home run with the Sox, while Marcelo Mayer picked up his first homer of the season. Xander Bogaerts went hitless in his first game at Fenway Park since he signed with the Padres.
Dylan Cease (34% Whiff%) struck out six against the White Sox but didn’t make it out of the fifth. Chicago (AL) won in extra innings 5-4.
The Twins-Rays game was delayed thanks to a power outage at Target Field. A seven-run seventh inning for the Twins helped give Minnesota a 10-4 victory over Tampa.
Chase DeLauter hit his fifth home run of the season for the Guardians, who won 4-1 over the Cubs in Cleveland.
Philadelphia trounced the Rockies 10-1 in Colorado. Brandon Marsh, Bryce Harper, and Kyle Schwarber all hit home runs.
Three home runs from the Reds helped give Cincinnati a 5-3 victory over the Rangers.
Seattle defeated the Angels 3-1 in Los Angeles’ home debut. No runs were scored until the 10th.
Griffin makes MLB debut
The Pirates won 5-4 in their home opener against the Orioles. Mitch Keller gave up one run over six innings to secure the victory.
Konnor Griffin made his MLB debut and impressed immediately. The 19-year-old picked up an RBI double in his first at-bat, which came off a Kyle Bradish (36.8% Whiff%) breaking ball.
Gunnar Henderson had three hits for the Orioles, including a home run in the ninth inning off Gregory Soto.
Other notes
Max Muncy and Lawrence Butler hit home runs for the Athletics, who defeated the Astros 11-4.
Two home runs from Francisco Alvarez helped power the Mets to a 10-3 victory over the Giants.
Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson hit home runs in the ninth inning to break a deadlocked game in Arizona. The Braves defeated the Diamondbacks 2-0.
