On a full day of MLB action on May 27, we saw some history. Cristopher Sanchez broke a century-long record in Phillies history, leading the charge for the team again on the mound. Meanwhile, the Cubs were able to end a lengthy skid,

Sanchez stands alone in Phillies history

Cristopher Sanchez broke Grover Cleveland Alexander’s mark for the longest scoreless streak for a pitcher in the Phillies history — and it’s still active.

Sanchez entered the day with a 37.2 IP scoreless streak, 3.1 IP behind Alexander’s mark of 41 straight in 1911. The left-hander tossed seven scoreless against the Padres to easily break it. He also struck out nine in the win.

Kyle Schwarber had two hits, while Trea Turner hit his seventh home run in the ninth to cap off a 3-0 win.

Cubs end losing streak

Michael Conforto & Ian Happ hit home runs for the Cubs, who were able to snap a 10-game losing streak.

Both Bubba Chandler and Jameson Taillon, the two starters, gave up four earned runs in their respective outings. A six-run seventh inning helped propel the Cubs to a 10-4 win over the division rival.

First MLB wins for Gibson & Sandlin

Both Trey Gibson (Orioles) and David Sandlin (White Sox) won on May 27, giving the two rookies their first Major League wins.

Gibson only struck out one and walked four over 5.2 IP. But he only allowed one run in what was a great night for the Orioles’ offense. Baltimore scored 11 runs, Gunnar Henderson hit two home runs, and Blaze Alexander drove in six on the night against the Rays.

As for Sandlin, the 25-year-old went six innings and tossed 61 pitches, fewer than the 71 he threw in his last outing with Triple-A. He struck out four and only allowed one run in what was a grand night for the White Sox’s offense. Chicago (AL) scored 15 runs on the Twins, and Munetaka Murakami helped play a role.

Alvarez & Murakami up to 20

Murakami hit his 20th home run of the season on May 27, becoming the first in the American League by minutes to get to that marker.

Yordan Alvarez, meanwhile, hit two home runs against the Rangers to get to 20 himself. Houston defeated the Rangers 4-3.
