The AL West features at least one club that can claim a Minor League affiliate won a title in 2026. But championships aside, the final few weeks of the 2026 MiLB season was, to a certain extent, largely defined by the infusion of new talent into the five farm systems of the AL West over the summer.

Angels

Rancho Cucamonga was a hot destination for Angels prospect watchers over the last few weeks of 2026.

Out of the top seven in terms of total hits over the final two weeks of the California League season, three (Jaxon Willits, Angel Arredondo, Joswa Lugo) were Angels prospects. Arredondo and Willits were both brought into the system this past summer, while Lugo is a notable prospect.

Granted, there was a lot of swing-and-miss shown from Lugo, who was promoted midseason after a good run in the ACL. Nonetheless, he had six total extra-base hits over his final 14 contests.

For those who saw our NL West September farm report, the Quakes also had two players rank among the league best in Pull FB%, always a good metric to check for power potential. Those two were Team Brazil star Lucas Ramirez, plus Gavin Grahovac. Grahovac (5) finished one shy of the California League home run lead over the final weeks.

Also in that NL West report, we showcased that Mason McGwire had a good run in High-A. McGwire, acquired from the Cubs for Ryan Zeferjahn, had a Whiff% of 32.4% between August 20 and September 6, as well as 18 strikeouts over his final 13 innings with High-A Tri-City.

Infielder Kendrey Maduro, over the last few weeks of the Northwest League season, led the circuit in hits (24). Maduro slashed .407/.438/.661 with one home runs and 11 extra-base hits over a 14-game span.

And as we noted on the 21st, Rocket City was on the verge of capturing the Southern League title as of this writing.

Astros

The Houston Astros’ Low-A affiliate won the Carolina League title, thanks to a hefty batch of intriguing talent.

Houston’s 2026 first-rounder Logan Hughes was fantastic down the stretch for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Hughes had 13 extra-base hits, posted an OPS over 1.000, and was one of the most consistent contact hitters in Low-A over the final month of 2026.

And amidst all the strong work from Bryce Mayer and Jackson Nezuh in 2026, perhaps the pitching prospect who took the biggest step this past year was 6’6” right-hander Jagger Beck. Beck struck out 102 batters over 86 innings this season for Fayetteville. Over the last two plus weeks of 2026, his 42.1% Whiff% was the highest among all Carolina League pitchers.

Fleshed-out arsenal, including a jumping breaking ball and mid-80s changeup.

Moving to High-A Asheville, Xavier Neyens‘ 2026 season did not end particularly well. Neyens slashed .178/.339/.444 with three home runs and six extra-base hits over his final 12 games. Look, the power is undisputable, as is Neyens’ ability to take pitches and walks. The problem is whether the approach, between the swing-and-miss and falling behind in counts, will haunt him over time.

Jason Schiavone rebounded after a slow start in Triple-A to hit .269/.424/.500 over a six-game sample size. Schiavone ended his breakout season with 32 total home runs between three levels. There was a ton of swing-and-miss (42%) in Double-A before his promotion, and that likely can’t be helped at this point.

His power, though, remains some of the best in the Astros’ farm system.

Athletics

The Athletics will have some decisions to make down the line, regarding their outfield.

Amidst a collection of players that includes three recently-extended hitters, plus a rookie in center field, Devin Taylor is very much on the table for a 2027 debut. Taylor hit well over a 16-game span with Triple-A Las Vegas, which ended his regular season with a slash line of .308/.411/.493 with 23 home runs and 53 extra-base hits between three levels.

Before his move to Triple-A, Taylor stuck with his tried-and-true method of working counts.

In Double-A, it was a strong final few weeks for two notable prospects. Steven Echavarria struck out 22 over 15 innings, along with a .60 ERA, over his final three outings with Midland. Corey Avant, meanwhile, struck out 28 over 17 innings. However, Avant walked 14. He finished with 141 strikeouts over 115 innings.

The Low-A Stockton Ports made the California League playoffs. The stars were front-and-center, as Drew Burress stole 10 bases and notched 19 hits over his final 15 games. Roman Martin, also a part of that 2026 MLB Draft class, walked 13 times over 14 contests to make up for the .180 average in that span.

Between Burress & Taylor, it’s obvious as to what the Athletics are trying to accomplish long-term with their outfield. Keep it fast and rangy in center, and build it out with players with pop, and the ability to work walks. True to the ol’ Moneyball mantra.

Mariners

Speaking of the 2026 MLB Draft, Ace Reese put on a show in the California League.

Reese ended the year batting .440 over a 21-game sample size. Sure, it was small in nature. But it doesn’t negate the fact that Reese can be a special hitter, one who could be a valuable corner infielder for Seattle in the very near future.

His 17 hits over the final two weeks of 2026 were second most on Inland Empire, behind fellow 2026 draft pick Jake Brown.

As noted above in the California League Whiff% chart above, though, it could have went better for Grant Jay and Nick Becker. Granted, this was expected from Jay, who racked up the strikeouts at Dallas Baptist. But for Becker, questions after he struck out 122 times over 86 contests in his first full pro season.

Moving up to High-A, Luis Suisbel and Brandon Eike ranked near the top of the Northwest League hit leaderboard during the final few weeks of the year. Luke Stevenson ended the year with five home runs over his last 14 contests, which gave him 22 in total on the year.

Stevenson also stayed true to his approach, as the former first-rounder continued to pace the league in terms of Take%.

Rangers

The Rangers have a special one with Yolfran Castillo.

Castillo is one of those players who could wind up being a nice all-around hitter. The 19-year-old slashed some pull-side pop in his final few weeks, in a campaign in which he slashed .288/.390/.416 with eight home runs and 38 extra-base hits. Not to mention, Castillo walked (70) almost as many times as he struck out (740.

He, along with Marco Argudin and Kaden Carpenter, were among the Crawdads to hit two home runs over the final two weeks of 2026.

Up in High-A, Quincy Scott (four home runs) and Arturo De Freitas (three) each hit very well down the stretch for Hub City. Outfielders Paxton Kling and Maxton Martin each had 15 hits over the final couple of weeks, as did Evan Morrison.

Sebastian Walcott forced his way to Triple-A in September, after the young shortstop made the most of what was an injury-shortened campaign. Over his last 17 games with Double-A Frisco, Walcott had 26 total hits, six of which were home runs, plus eight stolen bases. In 41 games in total, Walcott hit 10 home runs, nearly matching his career-high of 13.

The Rangers don’t have to rush Walcott up to the Majors, even though he may be ready at this point. But if 2026 was any indication, it’s that Walcott could take that “real” next step in 2027 with a full, healthy campaign.

It was also a strong last month for outfielders Dylan Dreiling and Yeison Morrobel, who tied Walcott for the most hits (26) on the club over the last weeks of the Texas League regular season.
