Toronto continued to add to the roster in Dunedin, as veteran reliever Joe Mantiply rejoined the team on a Minor League deal. Mantiply will fight for a roster spot after he rebounded from a tough early-season run with the Diamondbacks last year.
Blue Jays add lefty
The Blue Jays re-signed former Diamondbacks reliever Joe Mantiply to a Minor League deal. That deal also came with a non-roster invite to 2026 Spring Training.
Mantiply, a 35-year-old reliever, was highly leaned upon from 2021 through the 2024 season. The left-hander was a 2022 NL All-Star and was a master of inducing chases outside of the strike zone. During that 2022 campaign, Mantiply had a Chase% of 40% and also posted a 2.5 BB% rate.
But last season, the left-hander gave up five home runs over 9.2 IP with the Diamondbacks. He was DFA’d in May and signed to a Minor League deal by the Jays in the summer. Mantiply struck out 19 and didn’t allow a walk over 15.2 IP with Buffalo (AAA).
Additionally, the Blue Jays optioned pitcher Adam Macko to Triple-A. Macko is presently with Team Canada for the WBC.
Tigers demote Montero
The Tigers optioned pitcher Keider Montero to Triple-A on March 4, the same day that he tossed three scoreless innings and struck out three in an exhibition against Panama.
Montero will likely be needed as rotation depth this season for the Tigers, where he doesn’t have a true fit in the group. Tarik Skubal, Framber Valdez, Justin Verlander, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize figure to comprise the Tigers’ rotation to start 2026.
Braves make cuts
The Braves optioned relief pitcher Rolddy Munoz to Triple-A Gwinnett. Munoz, one of the best groundball pitchers in the Southern League last season, walked three over .2 IP in Grapefruit League action.
Additionally, Garrett Baumann and Owen Murphy were reassigned to Minor League camp. Murphy, one of the top prospects in the Braves‘ farm system, struck out six over four innings for Atlanta this spring.
