The 2nd of July wasn’t a major day, as far as the volume of moves was concerned. However, the most notable developments were the suspensions levied on four players, two from Washington and two from Boston, from a brawl earlier in the week.

Suspensions issued for Nats-Red Sox brawl

Cade Cavalli & Willson Contreras were suspended seven games for their actions on June 30 that sparked a bench-clearing brawl between the Nationals and Red Sox.

Those were the most notable suspensions handed out on the day by Major League Baseball, which announced discipline on the 2nd of July. Additionally, Miles Mikolas (Nationals) and Nate Eaton (Red Sox) were given five-game suspensions.

Contract selections

The Mets selected the contract of Jefry Yan and optioned him to Triple-A. Yan, 29, was one of the top swing-and-miss pitchers in the Eastern League over the first half of the season.

Veteran big-league catcher Luke Maile had his contract selected by the Royals.

The Rangers selected pitcher Ben Peoples from Triple-A Round Rock. Peoples, shipped to Texas from Chicago (AL) nearly a year after the White Sox acquired him in the Adrian Houser trade, struck out 45 over 37 innings this year in the Minors.

Recalls & options

Paul Gervase (Dodgers) and Jim Jarvis (Braves) were recalled from Triple-A.

Charlie Barnes (Dodgers), John Rave (Royals), Yovanny Cruz (Yankees), Winston Santos (Rangers), and Jose Cuas (Royals) were optioned to the Minors.

Other notes

Rowdy Tellez (Braves) and Eric Cerantola (Royals) were designated for assignment.

The Nationals signed pitcher Konnor Pilkington to a Minor League deal. Additionally, Washington released Trevor Gott, who was in Triple-A Rochester.

Boston signed pitcher Sam McWilliams to a Minor League deal.

Chris Paddack (Rangers) and Wilkin Ramos (Giants) were sent outright to Triple-A.
