The Cubs’ offense has clicked over the last few weeks, and that remained in full effect on July 1. Dansby Swanson continued his tear with a three-home-run day. Meanwhile, the Rays were the first AL team to 50 wins, and the Blue Jays picked up a win on Canada Day.
Cubs score 23 in Wrigley
Chicago hit eight home runs in a runaway 23-3 victory over the Padres.
Dansby Swanson, one day after a two-homer night, hit three on July 1. Two were off his old Vanderbilt teammate Walker Buehler, while the last was off catcher Rodolfo Duran.
Michael Conforto hit two. Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch got one, as did Pete Crow-Armstrong. Crow-Armstrong is one home run away from locking up a 20-20 season.
The Cubs now have a five-game winning streak, while the Padres enter a major series against the Dodgers on a five-game losing streak.
Toronto take series finale versus Mets
The Blue Jays scored nine on Canada Day, and Toronto finished the day with a victory against the Mets to complete the two teams’ series.
Sean Keys, who was called up last week, hit his first career home run against the team that’s not too far from his hometown in New York. Myles Straw also got a hold of one, his third of the season.
Aside from those two, Ernie Clement, Alejandro Kirk, Kazuma Okamoto, and Nathan Lukes each had two hits.
Mets starter Freddy Peralta gave up five earned runs and seven hits over four innings.
Nats score 10 against Red Sox
The Nationals’ offense was able to hit Payton Tolle for six runs, as Washington scored 10 to defeat Boston by eight runs in the two teams’ series finale.
It was a pair of firsts on the 1st, as Andres Chaparro and Nasim Nunez each hit their first home runs of the season. James Wood belted his 22nd of the season in the seventh.
Wood, as well as Curtis Mead, Dylan Crews, and Jacob Young, each had two hits.
Rays win 7th straight
The Rays won their 50th game of 2026, as Tampa Bay shut out the Royals 4-0 in Kansas City.
Shane McClanahan struck out four over six scoreless innings for the Rays, while Junior Caminero hit yet another home run, his 24th, in the first inning off Seth Lugo.
Caminero is now on a six-game home run streak.
Jac Caglianone had two hits for Kansas City.
Skenes hit around in Philly
Paul Skenes gave up six hits and seven earned runs, as the Phillies won 10-6 over the Pirates.
Neither starting pitcher made it through five. Zack Wheeler struck out 10 over 4.2 IP but the righty allowed nine hits and four earned runs in a 104-pitch outing.
It was, as the run total indicates, a good day for the Phillies’ offense. Trea Turner hit his 10th home run, as did Alec Bohm. A solo shot from Brandon Marsh off Skenes was Marsh’s 15th home run of the season.
