The last day of May saw the Giants make somewhat of a surprising move. Jonah Cox, who tore up the Eastern League over the first two months, skipped Triple-A and was summoned to the Giants’ big-league roster on May 31. Plus, the Pirates placed pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski on the restricted list.

Giants select Cox

The Giants selected outfielder Jonah Cox from Double-A Richmond.

It’s been a career year for Cox, who hit an even .400 with the Flying Squirrels over 44 games before being moved up. As we noted in our May NL West farm report, Cox showed a consistent ability to not just make contact regularly but also hit for some pop. He hit 21 extra-base hits in the Eastern League.

Cox was one of three players with no MLB experience to be called up on the day. Twins pitcher Mike Paredes and Marlins pitcher Josh White were also called up.

Mlodzinski placed on restricted list

The Pirates placed pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski on the restricted list.

Mlodzinski pitched well overall in a rotation role but was bounced out of it when Jared Jones was added to the active roster this past week.

Recalls & options

Cam Booser (Rays), Trevor Martin (Rays), Chris Murphy (White Sox), Cam Sanders (Pirates), and Travis Adams (Twins) were recalled.

Will Brennan (Giants), John Klein (Twins), Gage Workman (Tigers), Eric Cerantola (Royals), and Carlos Rodriguez (Brewers) were optioned.

Other notes

The Cardinals designated reliever Matt Pushard for assignment. He is a Rule 5 pick, so Pushard would need to be offered back to the Marlins, his original team.

Andrew Wantz (Rays) and Ryan Borucki (Giants) were also DFA’d.

Baltimore sent Dietrich Enns outright to Triple-A Norfolk.
