In need of immediate outfield help on the big-league roster, the Mariners looked to their High-A affiliate for a pickup in a pinch. Plus, the Brewers designated offseason addition Luis Rengifo for assignment.

Mariners promote outfielder

The Mariners selected the contract of outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. from High-A Everett to replace Randy Arozarena, who went on the IL, on the active roster.

Washington Jr., a 26-year-old outfielder and an 19th-round pick from Purdue four years ago, becomes a Major Leaguer in one of the more fascinating ways. While he did have a career-high seven home runs, he went .219/.309/.394 across 264 games and made it as high as Triple-A as a roster filler.

But in need of bodies and with Triple-A Tacoma on the road, Washington Jr. gets his shot.

Brewers cut Rengifo

On the same day that the Brewers promoted infielder Cooper Pratt for his MLB debut, Milwaukee designated Luis Rengifo for assignment.

It’s been a steep fall from grace for Rengifo, who slashed .205/.280/.254 on the season. And as of June 16, the switch-hitting infielder was one of four players with 175+ plate appearances to not have a home run this season.

The only other three were Nasim Nunez, Chandler Simpson, and Taylor Walls.

Recalls & options

Gavin Hollowell (Cubs), Max Lazar (Phillies), Dax Fulton (Marlins), and Petey Halpin (Guardians) were recalled from Triple-A.

Jhonny Pereda (Mariners), Brewer Hicklen (Braves – had his contract selected on 6/16), Jonathan Pintaro (Mets), Mitch Spence (Royals), William Kempner (Marlins), Collin Price (Astros), and Anthony Nunez (Orioles) were optioned.

Other notes

Vidal Brujan (Mets), Jayden Murray (Astros), and Santiago Espinal (Dodgers) were designated for assignment.

The Phillies released pitcher Jackson Rutledge.
