On a very light day across MLB on September 21, there were still some notable moves. Perhaps the biggest was the Twins’ decision to select Aaron Sabato, a first-rounder by the club at the start of the decade, and add him to the Major League roster.
Twins promote former first-rounder
The Twins selected the contract of first baseman Aaron Sabato from Triple-A St. Paul.
Sabato was a first-round pick by the Twins in the shortened 2020 MLB Draft, after a strong, yet short career at North Carolina. But despite the pop, Sabato didn’t put up eye-popping numbers in 2023 and 2024 after he hit 41 combined homers between 2021 and 2022.
This past season with Triple-A St. Paul, Sabato slashed .273/.349/.528 with 25 home runs and a career-high 55 extra-base hits.
Catcher Alex Jackson was designated for assignment as a corresponding move.
Blue Jays make moves
The Blue Jays shifted their pitching around, as the final week of the regular season approaches.
Trey Yesavage was activated off the injured list, and the club also recalled Chad Dallas from Triple-A. To make room, the club optioned Spencer Arrighetti to the FCL and designated pitcher Joe Mantiply for assignment.
Arrighetti was shifted down after he tossed 2.1 IP for the Blue Jays on the 20th. He wouldn’t be eligible to be called up until the end of the regular season barring an IL move by the Jays, which is not out of the question.
Mantiply, signed back in March by Toronto, made 17 appearances with the Blue Jays through May 17. The left-hander didn’t appear again at the big-league level until September, a month in which he worked in eight games for Toronto.
He was charged with at least one earned run in four of those games.
Nationals release Henry
The Nationals released Cole Henry on the 21st. Henry pitched in 11 Major League games, as well as 23 Minor League games between the FCL and Triple-A Rochester.
Aside from that, the Nationals also optioned Jared Simpson to make room for DJ Herz. Herz was officially activated from the IL.
And as noted on the 20th, the Tigers called up pitcher River Ryan from Triple-A Toledo. Check out more of our MLB coverage.
