While many of the top-tier free agents remain on the free agent market, there’s still been a lot of action this winter. Just not the sexy moves that some may still be waiting for. The Yankees, one of the quieter teams this winter, grabbed reliever Kaleb Ort off waivers, bringing him back to the organization. Meanwhile, the Dodgers reportedly signed platoon bat Andy Ibanez.
Yankees bring back Ort
Kaleb Ort is a Yankee yet again. The Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Astros, a week after the right-handed reliever was designated for assignment.
Ort is a hard-throwing righty who can induce a fair amount of swing-and-miss. Last season, he struck out 49 batters over 46 innings at the MLB level.
The 33-year-old was a farmhand of the Yankees from 2017 through the 2020 season. He was taken in the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft by the Red Sox in 2020, the team with which he ultimately made his MLB debut a year later.
Dodgers add Ibanez, Fitzgerald
The Dodgers were busy on January 9, as the team reportedly signed Andy Ibanez to a one-year deal (reported by multiple outlets, h/t MLB.com). Additionally, Ryan Fitzgerald was claimed off waivers by the Twins.
Ibanez split 2025 between the Tigers and their Triple-A affiliate. The 32-year-old infielder has been a good platoon hitter against left-handed pitchers. During the 2024 campaign, Ibanez slashed .292/.357/.445 (.802 OPS) with four home runs and 12 extra-base hits over 154 plate appearances.
Other moves
The Braves claimed reliever George Soriano off waivers from the Orioles. Infielder Brett Wisely was designated for assignment as a corresponding move.
Washington claimed ex-Blue Jays pitcher Paxton Schultz off waivers from Toronto.
The Rangers claimed pitcher Zak Kent off waivers from the Cardinals.
