While much has yet to be revealed regarding MLB The Show 25, we now know who will be on the cover. Reds star 2024 stolen base king Elly De La Cruz confirmed he’ll be the cover athlete, marking yet another rising star to be featured by Sony San Diego (SDS) and Major League Baseball. However, he’s not the only one.
“I’m excited to be on the MLB the Show 25 cover,” Elly De La Cruz stated on his Instagram account on January 27. He added, “You already know I’mma beat everyone,” he added in the short video clip.
The actual look of the cover, however, has not been revealed.
But shortly thereafter, Orioles star Gunnar Henderson posted a similar message on social media. “I heard that Elly was going to be on the cover of MLB The Show 25. But, I thought it was supposed to be me? So Elly, call me,” Henderson stated on his Instagram.
It’s interesting that De La Cruz & Henderson announced the news, rather than developer San Diego Studio. Typically, these types of announcements are carefully crafted by the developer and publisher and kept under embargo until confirmation is ready. However, it’s not unprecedented.
Two years ago, Derek Jeter confirmed he was going to be on the special edition of MLB The Show 23, on comedian Jimmy Fallon’s show.
De La Cruz and Henderson fit the mold of what Sony and MLB has liked when it comes to cover athletes: young, marketable, and exciting to watch. It’s the fourth time in five years the cover athlete(s) is under 25, joining Fernando Tatis Jr., Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
With De La Cruz — or Henderson, or both — now confirmed as the cover athlete for likely the standard edition, now the attention shifts to what will be announced next. Typically, SDS has waited until late-January to early-February to announce more info. We’ve reached that point already. Sony began to prepare its shift towards 25 when it teased news on the 26th.
A release date for MLB The Show 25 has not been confirmed, nor has additional information from what we received in November. The development team announced then that Sets/Seasons would be removed for Diamond Dynasty. And, an overhaul of both Road to the Show and Franchise was confirmed.
