Traditionally, Sony tends to wait until the start of the new calendar year before unveiling first info regarding the upcoming MLB The Show game. That changed in 2024, as Sony San Diego released an update blog on November 21, regarding MLB The Show 25. Sony confirmed that beginning in MLB The Show 25, Sets will no longer be a thing, as well as other tweaks to the franchise.

In a blog post on The Show website, Sony confirmed that in MLB The Show 25, Sets will not be brought back in Diamond Dynasty. The franchise used Sets/Seasons in 23 and 24, designed to create team diversity throughout the year. Sony stated it appreciated players’ feedback regarding the feature.

Sony added that players can use any card freely throughout MLB The Show 25.

The Sets/Seasons concept was maligned on social media. Some felt it was designed to continuously make players buy Stubs, the game’s online currency. Additionally, the season resets made it extremely tough to use previously-unlocked players. This is because is took nearly an entire season (roughly two and a half months) to get these rewards.

Under the current system, only cards “in-season” could be used for Ranked Seasons and most Conquest maps. Other modes, like Battle Royale and Mini Seasons, did not have this requirement.

It should be noted that SDS stated Season 4 will be a harbinger of what to expect from The Show 25’s Diamond Dynasty content. Players will also be able to earn “Now and Later” MLB The Show 24 packs beginning in Season 4. These will unlock packs for 25.

Sony added there will be additional non-Diamond Dynasty changes coming to the franchise.

Road to the Show will “return control” to how players develop. Plus, it’ll have more depth in the story before a player gets drafted. Franchise will have improved “trade evaluation metrics.” And as far as gameplay is concerned, SDS touts improved defensive AI and more engaging action.

MLB The Show 24 will begin capping off its lifecycle on November 22 with Season 4. All cards from past seasons will be made eligible.

Season 4 will include new Finest cards, including ones for Aaron Judge and Bryan Reynolds, plus an XP path which will feature 99 OVR cards of Jose Ramirez and Bobby Witt Jr.
