Generally speaking, hitters who have hit at least 500 career home runs are usually put on the fast track to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. However, the likes of Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez, and Barry Bonds have all been excluded to either their confirmed or suspected use of performance-enhancing drugs.
The most recent name to be added to this list is Tigers 3B and future Baseball Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera launched his 500th career bomb in 2021.
As of 2023, Cabrera is the only active player in MLB to have at least 500 career home runs. Nelson Cruz, who entered play on 5/27/2023 with 462 career home runs, is second in the league in total career home runs among active players.
