On January 28, the Red Sox confirmed a list of nine non-roster invitees for 2025 Spring Training. The list includes a trio of high-end prospects in a system that’s still deep despite the Garrett Crochet. Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, plus a breakout prospect from 2024 are on that list.
Boston invited their trio of top prospects — Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer — to begin 2025 Spring Training.
Anthony, a 20-year-old outfielder, emerged as one of baseball’s best prospects in 2023. He continued his upward trajectory in 2024, as Anthony hit .291/.396/.498 with 18 home runs, 21 stolen bases, and a career-best 54 extra-base hits.
The former second-round pick hit .344 in Triple-A last season over 35 games. With a good spring, it’s not inconceivable to think Anthony could either break the roster out of camp, or be a early-season callup.
Campbell, a 2023 fourth-round pick, was arguably the breakout prospect of the year in 2024. The former Georgia Tech bat slashed .330/.439/.558 with 20 home runs and 55 extra-base hits over 115 games. The 22-year-old finished with a 19-game trial in Worcester (AAA).

A tall, athletic infielder, Campbell has a quiet swing and showcased above-average pop in the Minors last season. And, he could be playing in Boston at some point this season.
Lastly, the long wait for Marcelo Mayer may come to an end soon. The Red Sox’s 2021 first-round pick only played 77 games and thanks to Anthony and Campbell, has lost some of the spotlight. However, Mayer hit very well when healthy last season.
The 22-year-old hit .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs and 36 extra-base hits with Portland (AA) in 2024. He’s further away from the Majors, compared to the other two. However, he may not need much more time.
Additionally, the Red Sox will invite Nathan Hickey, Mark Kolozsvary, Jacob Webb, Brian Van Belle, plus former Major Leaguers Abraham Toro and Jovani Moran.
Toro, signed to a Minor League deal on January 28, played 94 games with the Athletics last season. The 28-year-old hasn’t hit well to stick as a regular with any of his former MLB teams. Last season, he slashed .240/.293/.350 with six home runs and 24 extra-base hits.
Moran, meanwhile, was acquired last month from the Twins. The left-handed missed all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John and showed impressive stuff when healthy, including a good fastball and plus changeup. On the other hand, Moran’s dealt with significant command issues throughout his career.
The Red Sox join the likes of the Dodgers, Rangers, and Rockies, all teams that’ve announced their non-roster invites over the last few days.
