The Royals confirmed which prospects will be non-roster invitees to Spring Training this past weekend. Kansas City will bring several of their big-name prospects. Two of those names include Blake Mitchell and Jac Caglianone, the Royals’ top picks in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
Blake Mitchell had a decent first full pro campaign in 2024, hitting 18 home runs and swiping 26 bases between Low-A and High-A. The 20-year-old finished with Quad Cities and it’s reasonable to think he’ll be back in High-A again, as he only played five games at the level.
However, one negative on his campaign was the strikeouts; Mitchell struck out 149 times (30.7% K%) last season.
As for Jac Caglianone, he posted a .690 OPS in High-A after a whirlwind 2024 season. The Royals stated that the team was open to Caglianone, selected sixth overall in 2024, pitching to begin his pro career. However, despite how good of a pitcher was at Florida, the bat is well ahead.
The other non-roster invitees for the Royals this spring were former first-round pick Gavin Cross, Ben Kudrna, Kyle Hayes, Tyson Guerrero, Tyler Tolbert, Brian O’Keefe, Anthony Simonelli, Luca Tresh, Chandler Champlain, Omar Hernandez, Carter Jensen, Javier Vaz, Beck Way, Andrew Hoffmann, John Rave, Steven Zobac, and Cam Devanney.
Out of the above names, Kudrna and Jensen are the most notable names.
Kudrna, a second-round pick in 2021, struck out 119 over 115 frames last season, ending in Double-A, The 21-year-old could be in the Majors this season.
The same could be said for Jensen, a fellow catcher, who hit 18 home runs between High-A and Double-A next season. The Royals have catching depth at the MLB level, though, so there’s no rush for Jensen.
The Royals’ non-roster invitee announcement was part of a relatively quiet weekend across Major League Baseball. Among other notable moves included the Giants finalizing Justin Verlander’s deal, plus the Nationals adding reliever — and former Royal — Jorge Lopez.
