Each summer, the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts becomes a hotbed for some of baseball’s best up-and-coming prospects. Ten teams comprise the Cape Cod League, a summer collegiate wooden-bat league that gives NCAA talent the chance to compete against the best and push their future draft stock up. So, when is the start date for the 2024 Cape Cod League? Here’s what baseball fans should know,
Cape Cod League start and end dates
The start date for the 2024 Cape Cod League is June 15, 2024, with a full slate of games. The final regular-season games for the 2024 campaign will take place on August 4.
Cape Cod League playoffs begin on August 6, with the League Championship Series scheduled to start on August 7. The 2024 Cape Cod League World Series, a best-of-three, will run from August 10-12.
The Cape Cod League traditionally features many of the best freshman and sophomore collegiate players across the NCAA, and juniors either not selected in the MLB Draft or hoping to solidify their status among teams. Just in 2023, the likes of Travis Bazzana, Braden Montgomery, and Seaver King, all expected 2024 first-round picks, played in the Cape Cod League.
However, keep in mind that many of the elite names for the 2025 MLB Draft may not spend much time, if any, in the Cape. This is due to the College World Series, which takes place during the start of the season, as well as the USA Collegiate Baseball schedule.
Many top names, like Jac Caglianone, Ryan Johnson, Trey Yesavage, and Hagen Smith, suited up in the stars-and-stripes but not in the Cape during the summer of 2023.
Notable names who played in the Cape include Nomar Garciaparra, Thurman Munson, Paul O’Neill, Jason Varitek, Evan Longoria, Darin Erstad, Lance Berkman, and Ben Sheets.
