The 2024 MLB season is still underway but it’s never too early to think about 2025 — especially for clubs out of the playoff race. Major League Baseball (MLB) announced the 2025 Spring Training schedule in August 2024, and like past years, the action leading up to Opening Day will take place in Florida and Arizona. Here’s a look at what you should know about the start date for the Spring Training schedule.
When is the start date for the 2025 MLB Spring Training schedule?
The 2025 MLB Spring Training schedule starts on February 20, when the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs will face off in Arizona.
It makes sense for the Dodgers and Cubs to begin the Spring Training schedule before the other 28 teams since those two squads will begin the 2025 regular season in Japan. The 2025 season will kick off in Japan, a week before it starts domestically.
Per Major League Baseball, Grapefruit League action in Florida will commence a day later as the Rays and Yankees will play in Tampa on the 21st. Other Cactus League Teams will also start their schedule, including the Rockies, Diamondbacks, Mariners, and Padres.
Additionally, the Red Sox will play an exhibition game on February 21 against the Northeastern Huskies before the start of their official schedule. Boston did so before the 2024 Grapefruit League schedule.
Cactus and Grapefruit League action will run through March, leading up to the start of the 2025 season for 28 of the 30 teams on March 27, 2025.
Some Spring Training games are currently scheduled without a host venue over the final few days before Opening Day. Previously, select MLB teams will play exhibition games in MLB stadiums leading up to the start of the year.
When do workouts start?
On January 14, MLB confirmed the first mandatory workout days for each of the 30 clubs. The Cubs will be the first team to workout, on February 9.
