There are a number of ways to get on base but none more painful than the hit by pitch (HBP). And, it’s important that there were several MLB hitters from this past year who seemed to get plunked more often. But, who were the HBP leaders from this past year? These were the MLB HBP leaders in 2023:
Name | Team | Total HBP |
---|---|---|
Ty France | Mariners | 34 |
Pete Alonso | Mets | 21 |
Andrés Giménez | Guardians | 20 |
Isaac Paredes | Rays | 20 |
Randy Arozarena | Rays | 18 |
Jeff McNeil | Mets | 18 |
Sean Murphy | Braves | 18 |
Luke Raley | Rays | 18 |
Mark Canha | Mets/Brewers | 17 |
Jose Caballero | Mariners | 17 |
Last season, Ty France was hit 21 times. That was good for fifth-most in the Majors. In 2023, the Mariners infielder was plunked 34 times, six times more than 2022 MLB HBP king Mark Canha was a year earlier.
Given that the Mariners had both France and Jose Caballero, who was plunked 17 times this year, it’s not a shock that Seattle led the Majors in hit by pitchers (111).
And speaking of Canha, both the ex-Met and several of his former teammates were plunked in spades.
Canha, Pete Alonso, and Jeff McNeil all made the top ten for a Mets team that finished with 107 HBP, second-most in MLB and just four behind Seattle. That figure came awfully close to the Mets’ 2022 total, when New York hitters were hit a league-high 112 times.
Three Tampa Bay Rays also were among the players who were hit the most in the league this past season. Tampa finished the regular season with the third-most HBP (95).
