On November 14, 2022, Major League Baseball announced the two winners of the Rookie of the Year award. Every season, one rookie from each league is given the award to commemorate standout play in the Majors. So, who were the winners in 2022? Here’s how the votes shook out for both the AL and NL Rookie of the Year awards.
American League
In the American League, it wasn’t a close race. Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez won the AL Rookie of the Year award, receiving 29 of 30 first-place votes. Rodriguez beat out Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan, and Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman. Rutschman received the other first-place vote.
It was a strong opening act for Rodriguez in 2022, a season that saw “J-Rod” finish second in the Home Run Derby and help carry Seattle to its first playoff appearance since 2001. Rodriguez had a .284/.345/.509 slash line in 2022, as the 21-year old crushed 28 home runs and drove in 75 RBIs. Rodriguez was also a force on the basepaths, stealing 25 bags in his initial season in the Majors.
National League
On the National League side, things were a bit closer. Heading into the vote, the two favorites were both Atlanta Braves. Center fielder Michael Harris II solidified the Braves’ outfielder both defensively and offensively, while starter Spencer Strider became a top starter for Atlanta. In the end, Harris came out on top.
Harris received 22 of the 30 first-place votes, with Strider receiving the other eight. Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan finished third in the vote tally.
Michael Harris, who had a 135 OPS+ and 5.3 WAR in 2022, became the first Brave since Ronald Acuna Jr. in 2018 to win the NL Rookie of the Year. But it was the Georgia native’s all-around play that helped beat out fellow Brave Spencer Strider. Strider struck out 202 batters in just 131.2 innings in 2022, and finished up with a sparkling 1.00 WHIP.
