Notable Additions

The Diamondbacks’ troupe of starters wasn’t a weakness during the 2023 postseason when Arizona relied on the trio of Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Brandon Pfaadt. However, depth for a 162-game season was a question mark heading into the winter.

Arizona addressed the rotation with the addition of Eduardo Rodriguez, who had a very impressive 2023 with the Tigers after missing a healthy portion of 2022.

Another area of weakness for the D-Backs last year was third base. Arizona received subpar production from the position and hopes Eugenio Suarez will add some extra pop to the lineup after he came over from Seattle via trade.

Arizona also acquired outfielders Joc Pederson and Randal Grichuk via free agency, two former 20+ home run hitters.

Now, a look at the subtractions part of our Diamondbacks offseason recap.

Notable Subtractions

Arizona wound up retaining outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. after a strong 2023 campaign in the desert. But on the flip side, the D-Backs continued to address a logjam of left-handed hitting outfielders.

Dominic Fletcher, who made his MLB debut last year for Arizona and hit .301 (.791 OPS) in 102 plate appearances, was traded to the White Sox.

What to Expect from 2024

What a difference 12 months can make for a franchise. And heading into 2024, expectations are now very different for the D-Backs.

Arizona still has their core led by Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, and Christian Walker, and mini-breakouts from Alek Thomas and the aforementioned Brandon Pfaadt in October could mean that the group could only get better after winning the NL pennant.

Yet, the D-Backs are in a strange position where Arizona may very well improve their win total by 5-10 wins and still not win the division. But, Arizona does enter the year in a strong position, thanks in part to those additions made this past offseason.
