Even though the Mariners won 88 games — more than the reigning NL champions — in 2023, a late-season slump led to Seattle missing out on the postseason. And heading into 2024, the M’s will look different, to say the least. Here’s our Mariners offseason recap for 2023-24.

Notable Additions
- C/DH Mitch Garver
- OF Mitch Haniger
- RP Jackson Kowar
- 2B/3B Jorge Polanco
- 1B/OF Luke Raley
- RP Gregory Santos
- RP Levi Stoudt
- 2B/3B Luis Urias
- C Seby Zavala
The Mariners lineup will look quite different in 2024, including in the infield. Seattle acquired Luis Urias from the Red Sox to replace a slugger traded away earlier in the winter, as well as Jorge Polanco from the Twins.
The switch-hitting Polanco should fill a hole at second that Seattle’s had for some time — if he can stay healthy. Polanco had multiple IL stints in 2022 and 2023.
Seattle lost some power in their lineup, as one will see in the subtractions part of our Mariners offseason recap. To combat those losses, Seattle acquired Luke Raley from the Rays, signed catcher/designated hitter Mitch Garver, and re-acquired Mitch Haniger from the Giants.
Gregory Santos, who had a breakout campaign in 2023, was acquired from the White Sox for Zach DeLoach and hard-throwing prospect Prelander Berroa.
Notable Subtractions
- 2B/SS Jose Caballero
- RP Isaiah Campbell
- SP Marco Gonzales
- OF Teoscar Hernandez
- OF Jarred Kelenic
- RP Dominic Leone
- C Tom Murphy
- SP Robbie Ray
- 3B Eugenio Suarez
- RP Justin Topa
- 1B Evan White
Eight players accrued at least 100 games played for the Mariners last season. Four of those names — Eugenio Suarez, Teoscar Hernandez, Jarred Kelenic, and Jose Caballero — won’t return for 2024.
Seattle traded Eugenio Suarez to Arizona, while the M’s used Jose Caballero to get Luke Raley. Teoscar Hernandez went to free agency, and Jarred Kelenic was moved in the salary dump trade that sent Marco Gonzales and Evan White to Atlanta.
The M’s also traded Robbie Ray, although that move wasn’t a salary dump. Ray had a solid overall 2022 but struggled in the postseason and missed virtually all of 2023.
What to Expect in 2024
One of the subplots of the Mariners’ offseason was the future of Root Sports Northwest, their TV home. Several teams dealt with TV revenue questions this winter but Seattle’s was different.
The Mariners took complete control of the network in 2023. However, Comcast Xfinity moved the channel to a higher-tier package, a move that’s expected to affect TV revenue. Seattle did cut payroll this winter but it did come at a cost.
Still, the Mariners have a very real shot at winning the AL West in 2024. Seattle may very well have the deepest rotation in the division, led by Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, and George Kirby. Offensively, Julio Rodriguez is still center-stage, as the M’s return slugger Cal Raleigh and shortstop J.P. Crawford, the latter of whom had a career 2023.
And, the additions of Mitch Garver, Jorge Polanco, and Mitch Haniger can help lessen the blow of losing Eugenio Suarez and Teoscar Hernandez.
