Here’s a look at our best MLB bet picks for April 5 (odds via BetMGM New York Sportsbook):
- Jordan Hicks over 4.5 strikeouts (+130)
- Jose Quintana under 5.5 strikeouts (+105)
Jordan Hicks is up for our first pick, as he’s set to make his first in San Francisco. There is a higher degree of risk with this pick, as this will be the second time in a week that the Giants face the Padres, a team that hasn’t whiffed much to this point.
However, Hicks’ elite stuff, powered by a hard sinker, along with a terrific sweeper and good splitter, make him an intriguing pick.
For what it’s worth, Hicks struck out six over five scoreless frames last Saturday in San Diego.
As for our second pick, Mets starter Jose Quintana struck out six or more batters in a game just twice over his last 14 starts, dating back to 2023. Quintana doesn’t miss any bats, as he is a sinkerballer with good command and a penchant for getting called strikes.
It’s somewhat understandable as to why the over/under is set to 5.5, given that the Reds are in the bottom half of the league in Whiff% (28.0%) as of April 4. However, Cincinnati does have several good right-handed and switch-hitters, including Jonathan India, Spencer Steer, and Jeimer Candelario, that make this a complicated matchup.
