Power rankings
Here’s a look at our June power rankings for the 2024 NL Cy Young:
- Chris Sale
- Zack Wheeler
- Paul Skenes
- Dylan Cease
- Sonny Gray
Much like the AL Cy Young Award race, there’s a heavy favorite.
Chris Sale leads all pitchers in bWAR (6.3) and is in line to win the NL Triple Crown in pitching. Sale is the league leader in wins (17), ERA (2.35), and strikeouts (219). Should Sale win, it would be the first-ever Cy Young award for the eight-time All-Star.
Behind Sale is Zack Wheeler, who could be considered snake-bitten. Wheeler lost out on the Cy Young Award in 2021 when he finished runner-up to Corbin Burnes, even though the Phillies hurler led the Senior Circuit in strikeouts (241). This time around, Wheeler leads the NL in WHIP (0.97), is on pace for his third 200+ strikeout season in four years, and has been arguably a top-three pitcher in the Majors this season.
Paul Skenes’ dominance will net him Cy Young Award votes. Skenes struck out 151 over 120 frames since mid-May when he was called up. However, he didn’t have a full season to surpass Wheeler or Sale in the running.
Dylan Cease and Sonny Gray, both of whom are in the top five in strikeouts among NL pitchers, round out the top five.
When is the NL Cy Young winner announced?
The NL Cy Young Award winner is traditionally revealed after the conclusion of the postseason.
