Several interesting developments took place on the fantasy front this past week. Players came off — and on — the injured list, while two notable NL West prospects were called up to the bigs. And, both of those names are on this list. Here’s a look our 2025 Week 8 hitters to target on the waiver wire.
Best Week 8 hitters to target
- 1B/2B Jake Cronenworth (Padres)
- C Ryan Jeffers (Twins)
- SS Jordan Lawlar (Diamondbacks)
- C/OF Dalton Rushing (Dodgers)
- SS Trevor Story (Red Sox)
Look, Jordan Lawlar hasn’t picked up a hit since he was promoted back to Arizona this past week. Lawlar went on a rampage with Reno (AAA), documented multiple times in our MiLB coverage this season.
He hasn’t done much yet to this point but the tools are very much there. However, the one dilemma the Diamondbacks have — and for right now, a good problem to have — is how Arizona will work him, as well as Tim Tawa and Alek Thomas, into playing on a regular basis.
Next up is Trevor Story, who’s been on a cold spell of late. Story had a big April, as he belted five home runs and drove in 16. This month? The Red Sox shortstop is batting just .164 (9-55) with a home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI.
Some regression was likely coming for Story, a good-hitting shortstop who loves fastballs but chases and strikes out a lot. Now, I don’t think the 36.2% K% in May was expected. But nonetheless, consider a buy-low opportunity — something not always thought about in fantasy.
Getting back to the prospects, another notable one recently promoted was Dodgers catcher/outfielder Dalton Rushing. Rushing was a big-time prospect with pop and bat speed — and he wasted no time showing it. The 24-year-old went .400 (4-10) over his first three MLB games.
Like with Lawlar, the question with Rushing will be how much time he’ll get. He won’t be the Dodgers’ primary catcher, obviously, with Will Smith around. However, he’s hitting to this point, and the Dodgers have had some trouble getting production from the back half of their lineup this season.
Jake Cronenworth returned from the injured list on May 9 and has been productive by and large. Cronenworth picked up hits in six of his last nine contests, and along the way, tallied five runs and five RBI, as well.
Lastly, Ryan Jeffers helped keep the steam train rolling on May 17, as he belted a cookie off Tobias Myers to give him his third home run of the season. Jeffers has been hitting well of late, as the Twins catcher picked up seven RBI, along with 14 hits thus far in May.
Overview of Week 7
Ivan Herrera was a nice find for those who paid attention last week. Herrera finished tied with Pete Crow-Armstrong for the most hits (11) in the Majors over the last seven days.
Josh Jung came close with nine, and he belted three home runs and drove in seven during that span. Jordan Beck, meanwhile, added two more home runs to get to eight on the season.
Oh, and Rhys Hoskins had four hits and a home run on May 14.
