May 18 was an eventful day on the injury front. The Rangers will be without outfielder Evan Carter for the next few weeks, while the Pirates will hold their breath on young starter Jared Jones.
Carter out weeks
Texas is down another bat, as Evan Carter was placed on the 10-day IL with a quad strain. It’s a Grade 2 quad strain, which will keep him out for at least two weeks, per the team.
Carter was originally promoted on May 6 and picked up two hits in his season debut. Since then, Carter went 4-28 (.143) with a home run and three RBI.
Marlins get Lopez back, lose Edwards
Miami got infielder Otto Lopez back from the injured list on May 18. However, a second move was necessitated to get Lopez on the active roster.
The Marlins placed Xavier Edwards on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain. Edwards hasn’t played since May 14.
Jones to see elbow specialist
Pirates pitcher Jared Jones hasn’t pitched in the Majors this season thanks to a UCL sprain. But even though he was recovering, a setback will have him re-evaluated by physician Keith Meister on May 20.
Jones was initially shut down for six weeks after being diagnosed with the sprain. However, he was playing catch in April before the aforementioned setback.
Other injury news
The Astros confirmed starter Hayden Wesneski will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his 2025 campaign.
Minnesota placed left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day IL with a left forearm extensor strain, retroactive to May 15. Coulombe hasn’t allowed a run in 16.2 IP this season. Additionally, the Twins shifted Luke Keaschall to the 60-day IL.
The Dodgers placed reliever Kirby Yates on the 15-day IL with a right hamstring strain.
Baltimore placed Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day IL with a left shoulder impingement.
