With one week to go before the start of the 2025 MLB Postseason, there’s plenty of injury-related news to go around. Several notable players left their games on the 23rd. Additionally, Cubs received a positive update on Kyle Tucker, while Rangers fans won’t see their star middle infield together again until 2026.
Horton removed from start
Cubs pitcher Cade Horton was removed from his start on September 23 after only three innings.
Horton was removed with back tightness, per the team.
Tucker working out after returning to team
As for Kyle Tucker, the Cubs outfielder returned to the team and was seen doing light running before Chicago’s game against the Mets.
It’s a positive sign, given that Tucker hadn’t yet tested his calf as of September 21. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer stated that the star outfielder is moving in the right direction.
Albies done for 2025
The Braves placed Ozzie Albies on the 10-day IL, which will officially end his season.
He sustained a fractured left hamate bone after a swing on September 22.
Albies finished 2025 with a slash line of .240/.306/.365 (.671 OPS). His .365 slugging percentage is the lowest of his MLB career.
Seager will not return this season
Rangers shortstop Corey Seager will not return this season. Seager underwent an appendectomy in late August and will not have enough time to come back.
Additionally, manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that Marcus Semien (foot) will also miss the rest of the year.
Rehab assignments
Athletics outfielder Denzel Clarke was assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas for a rehab assignment. He’ll join an Aviators team that is vying for the Pacific Coast League championship.
Clarke was placed on the IL with a right adductor strain in July. He played one game in August before being taken off the assignment.
Other injury news
Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto was removed from his team’s game on September 23 with a hand injury.
Mets pitcher Tylor Megill underwent Tommy John surgery, per the team. Megill, given the usual recovery timeline of said surgery, will likely miss all of 2026.
Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas underwent foot surgery and will miss the rest of 2025.
MacKenzie Gore was placed on the IL with a right shoulder impingement.
The Blue Jays placed Ty France on the 10-day IL with left oblique inflammation.
Andrew Benintendi (Achilles tendinitis), Mason Thompson (biceps tendinitis), and Chayce McDermott (back discomfort) were also placed on the injured list.
Xander Bogaerts (Padres), Colin Selby (Orioles), Ryan Jeffers (Twins), Ryan Zeferjahn (Angels), and Anthony Santander (Blue Jays) were activated off the injured list. The activation of Santander off the 60-day IL prompted the Jays to DFA Alek Manoah.
Lastly, Roki Sasaki is expected to be activated on September 24.
