With just five days before the finalization of postseason-eligible player lists, Major League teams are making last-minute preparations. The Guardians, who’ve slipped in recent weeks, have put veteran first baseman Carlos Santana on waivers for potential takers. Additionally, the Blue Jays added an extra left-hander: former Blue Jays draft pick Ryan Borucki.
Borucki re-joins Jays
Toronto signed Ryan Borucki, released by the Pirates in August, to a Minor League deal. He was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.
Borucki, a 15tth-round draft pick by Toronto back in 2012, re-upped with Pittsburgh on a Minor League deal this past winter. The 31-year-old has generally produced swings and misses and high ground-ball rates. But, HE has gotten hit around over the last two years.
He’ll become depth for a Toronto team that, presently, has left-handers Justin Bruihl and Brendon Little.
Santana on waivers
The Guardians placed 1B/DH Carlos Santana on waivers, giving the first baseman a chance to join a contender before the August 31 postseason waiver deadline. Any team that would claim him would be on the hook for the roughly $2MM left on the $12MM deal he signed back in December.
Santana rejoined the Guardians last winter after Josh Naylor was traded to Arizona. However, he hasn’t hit for much power (.333 SLG), even against left-handed pitching. He’s slugged .353 against lefties, significantly compared to the .578 against left-handers last year.
Additionally, the Guardians have two natural first basemen on their roster: Kyle Manzardo and C.J. Kayfus.
Moore signs with Rangers
The Rangers signed utilityman Dylan Moore to a Minor League deal, per the New York Times.
Moore has long been a versatile player who can play multiple positions, steal bases, and pinch in with power on occasion. The 33-year-old stole a career-best 32 bases last season for Seattle.
The Mariners released him on August 25.
