March 24 was a big day for SEC powerhouse Mississippi State, as Hail State was able to pick up a major non-conference victory against a top-tier school from the Sun Belt. The same could not be said for the Georgia Bulldogs, as UGA took a big loss to Kennesaw State. Here’s a look at notes from the 24th.
Upset in Athens
Kennesaw State won 10-7 over the Georgia Bulldogs in a massive midweek loss for the SEC powerhouse.
The Owls were up 9-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Bulldogs picked up seven between the seventh and eighth innings. Bryce Calloway and Kolby Branch both had home runs in the game for UGA.
However, it was not enough to beat Kennesaw State. The Owls move to 11-10 overall.
MSU tops Southern Miss
In what was likely the biggest matchup of the day between two top-15 teams, the Mississippi State Bulldogs took down Southern Miss in a 12-0 shutout win.
Freshman left-hander Jack Bauer picked up the win, as he threw 1.1 innings in relief of Chris Billingsley. Another freshman, Jacob Parker, also had a big day, as he hit his fourth home run of the 2026 season.
Outfielder Aidan Teel had seven total bases, including his third home run of the year, on the 24th.
Wake Forest gets back on track
Wake Forest, which fell out of the top 25 this past week, won 11-1 over Elon on the 24th.
Duncan Marsten struck out five over 4.2 IP, earning himself his first win of the 2026 campaign.
Infielder Dalton Wentz had a big day, as he hit a home run and picked up six total bases on the day. Wentz now has seven home runs on the season.
Out-of-conference rivalry matchups
The Florida State Seminoles were shut out 5-0 on March 24 by the Florida Gators. Russell Sandefer, Luke McNeillie, and Jackson Barberi each threw three scoreless innings. Barberi struck out six. As for the offense, Blake Cyr and Ethan Surowiec each had two hits.
South Carolina and North Carolina played a neutral-site game in Charlotte, North Carolina. UNC beat the Gamecocks 9-1, thanks to a strong overall performance led by Walker McDuffie. Gavin Gallaher went 2-2 with a home run.
West Virginia, meanwhile, beat Marshall in an in-state rivalry matchup. Paul Schoenfeld and Matthew Graveline picked up five total bases cumulatively, while David Hagen and the Mountaineers shut out the Thundering Herd.
Indiana State took a 5-4 victory on March 24 against the Indiana Hoosiers.
Other notables
Coastal Carolina scored eight runs from the seventh inning onward to defeat Clemson on the road, by a score of 11-9.
Oregon State defeated USC 12-4. DH Bryce Hubbard hit a home run for the Beavers in the victory.
LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Alabama all won.
