Max Scherzer was scratched from his scheduled start versus the Red Sox on the 17th, as he is now back on the injured list. Plus, the Braves’ brass outlined expectations on when to expect Ronald Acuna Jr. back.
Acuna Jr. out for extended period
Braves manager Walt Weiss indicated that it will be some time before Ronald Acuna Jr. is back on an MLB field.
Weiss noted that the Braves will exercise caution with Acuna Jr., as this is the second time that he’s injured his hamstring in that particular spot. Acuna Jr. was placed on the IL with a Grade 1 hamstring strain last week.
Ohtani banged up
Dodgers TWP Shohei Ohtani picked up a win on June 17 against the Rays. However, Ohtani was doing so as he continues to deal with knee inflammation from the injury he suffered last week.
Manager Dave Roberts indicated that Ohtani’s knee will need to be managed moving forward (h/t AM 570 Los Angeles).
IL placements
The Blue Jays placed Max Scherzer on the injured list with back spasms. It is retroactive to June 14.
Guardians outfielder Chase DeLauter was placed on the 10-day IL with a right side rib fracture.
Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres is back on the IL with an oblique injury. Torres was placed there on June 18 (retroactive to 6/16) with a left oblique strain.
Cole Ragans (elbow impingement) and Spencer Strider (elbow inflammation) were transferred to the 60-day IL.
Rehab assignments
Blue Jays pitcher Shane Bieber struck out two over five innings, as he surrended four walks and seven hits for Triple-A Buffalo. Bieber averaged 92 MPH and topped out at 93 MPH.
The Red Sox had two rehabbers with Double-A Portland. Patrick Sandoval struck out four over three innings (44 pitches), while Romy Gonzalez went 0-3 with a strikeout.
Other notes
Cubs pitcher Edward Cabrera (cramp) is expected to make his next start.
Braves outfielder Michael Harris II (back) and Mariners outfielder Luke Raley (back) did not start for their respective teams.
Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez was removed with an unknown, apparent injury against the Orioles on the 17th.
