The 28th was not a kind day for several Major League teams. Tampa Bay avoided a major scare with Junior Caminero, who left his game after he took a ball to his right jaw. The Tigers, meanwhile, lost two notable players to injury.

Caminero suffers jaw contusion

Rays third baseman Junior Caminero left the team’s game on April 28 after he suffered a jaw contusion. It happened after he fouled a ball that came back and hit him in the unprotected part of his face.

Manager Kevin Cash indicated after the game that Caminero should play on the 29th.

Tigers lose Baez & Mize

The Tigers lost two players to injury on the 28th. One was Javier Baez, who was carted off the field after he ran into first base awkwardly. Per the team, he is being evaluated.

Casey Mize, the team’s starting pitcher, was also removed from the contest. The team indicated that it was due to right groin tightness.

Updates on Cubs’ injuries

The Cubs received bad news on Justin Steele, who is recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery. Steele suffered a flexor strain in his recovery, which will sideline him through at least mid-July, per the team.

Dansby Swanson, meanwhile, left the Cubs’ game against the Padres early on April 28. Per the team, it was due to a left glute cramp.

IL placements

Mets pitcher Kodai Senga underwent an epidural and was placed on the 15-day IL with lumbar spine inflammation. It’s retroactive to April 27. That was just one piece of injury-related news for the Mets on the day, as Luis Robert Jr. is day-to-day due to back tightness.

The Twins placed reliever Garrett Acton on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain, retroactive to April 26.

Athletics infielder Max Muncy was placed on the 10-day IL with a left fifth metacarpal fracture.

Rehab assignments

The Padres had two rehabbing pitchers in El Paso. Griffin Canning struck out four over five innings (68 total pitches). Canning averaged 94 MPH on the fastball. Additionally, Jeremiah Estrada tossed a scoreless inning.

Mets pitcher Joey Gerber struck out two in one inning for Triple-A Syracuse.

Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe went 0-3 for Double-A Somerset.

Astros outfielder Zach Dezenzo went 2-4 with two RBI for Double-A Corpus Christi. In that same game, Tatsuya Imai started for the Hooks. Imai gave up six hits and three walks over two innings. He was charged with five earned runs.

Jared Triolo went 3-4 with a home run for Double-A Altoona.

Other notes

Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (ankle) did not play against the Brewers.

Padres third baseman Manny Machado (calf) did not start on the 28th.

Per the Royals, infielder Jonathan India underwent season-ending surgery for a labral repair. Additionally, Vinnie Pasquantino was removed from the Royals’ game against the Athletics.
