The Mets’ injury troubles did not get better on April 15, as Jorge Polanco did not start thanks to an injury that has bothered him since the start of the year. The Yankees, meanwhile, will see Gerrit Cole get back into game action soon, as a date for his first rehab start was set.
Pivetta expected to miss a lot of time
Padres pitcher Craig Stammen confirmed that pitcher Nick Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain.
Pivetta, who left his last start with an elbow injury, is expected to miss weeks or months before he returns to San Diego.
Mets dealing with more injuries
Yet again, Jorge Polanco sat with that nagging Achilles injury that has been bothering him since the start of the year.
Like he did last week, Carlos Mendoza stated that Polanco could require an IL stint (h/t Newsday).
Additionally, 1B/OF Jared Young underwent surgery to repair a meniscus tear and will miss roughly six to eight weeks.
IL placements
Kyle Freeland was placed on the IL with left shoulder inflammation.
Rangers pitcher Chris Martin was placed on the 15-day IL with a shoulder impingement.
The Cardinals placed reliever Zach Pop on the 15-day IL with a right calf strain.
Giants outfielders Harrison Bader (left hamstring strain) and Jared Oliva (left wrist hamate fracture) were placed on the injured list.
Rehab assignments
Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage struck out five over 4.1 IP for Triple-A Buffalo. Yesavage, who gave up two runs against the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate, averaged 93 MPH.
Rays pitcher Edwin Uceta struck out three over 1.1 IP for Triple-A Durham. Uceta gave up five hits and averaged 94 MPH.
Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 1-3 with a run scored and a walk.
Orioles reliever Keegan Akin struck out one over two scoreless innings.
Esteury Ruiz (0-3, two K) and Maximo Acosta (1-3, one K) played for Triple-A Jacksonville.
Cardinals pitcher Matt Pushard threw a scoreless inning for Triple-A Memphis.
Other news
Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is scheduled to start his rehab assignment on April 17 with Double-A Somerset (h/t MLB.com).
Blake Snell threw a live BP session on April 15 (h/t AM 590).
Rockies pitcher Jose Quintana was activated off the injured list.
