The Astros will have to fight for a playoff spot without Carlos Correa. Correa, once a long shot to return, came close but won’t be available for the rest of 2026. The Phillies, meanwhile, placed Jesús Luzardo in the IL with less than two weeks left in the year.
Correa done for 2026
Astros manager Joe Espada indicated that Carlos Correa, recovering from ankle surgery, will not return this season.
According to Espada, the workload that Correa was facing was simply too much at this stage. The good news is that Correa didn’t suffer a setback during his recovery.
Correa was sent to Florida earlier this month to ramp up for a potential return late in the 2026 regular season.
Luzardo on IL
The Phillies placed pitcher Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day IL with left shoulder inflammation.
It’s another twist for Luzardo, who was scratched from a scheduled start against the Braves earlier in the month. At the time, everything seemed fine. Luzardo had an MRI which came back clean, and the left-hander expected to be back on the mound in short order. Instead, he won’t be eligible until the Phillies’ final regular-season series against the Rays.
Luzardo indicated that he should be back for the postseason (h/t Philadelphia Inquirer).
Santander scratched from rehab game
Blue Jays OF/DH Anthony Santander was scratched from his scheduled rehab appearance with Triple-A Buffalo on September 15.
Santander, recovering from shoulder surgery, was scratched with lower back tightness.
IL moves
Pete Fairbanks, who left his relief appearance on the 14th in Arizona, was placed on the 15-day IL with right median nerve irritation.
Athletics starter Gage Jump was placed on the 15-day IL with a left shoulder impingement.
The Braves placed pitcher Reynaldo Lopez on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.
Rays pitcher Tyler Wells went on the 15-day IL with right forearm tightness.
Rehab assignments
Nationals pitcher Connelly Early got on the mound for Triple-A Rochester, two days after a scheduled rehab start with Double-A Harrisburg was rained out. Early struck out two and walked two over one inning (35 pitches).
Also in that game, Josiah Gray tossed a scoreless inning.
Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage went 0.2 IP (34 pitches) for Triple-A Buffalo. Yesavage allowed two hits and walked one.
Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck struck out three over a scoreless inning (22 pitches) for Triple-A Worcester. Houck averaged 92 MPH on his sinker, and 94 MPH on his four-seam fastball.
Rays infielder Ben Williamson went 0-for-2 with a strikeout for Triple-A Durham.
Other notes
Nationals infielder CJ Abrams (neck tightness) did not play on September 15.
Chase DeLauter (wrist) and Samuel Basallo (shoulder) were also out of their teams’ respective lineups.
Orioles pitcher Shane Baz was removed after he was hit on the elbow with a Bo Bichette line drive.
