One of the six divisions officially has a crowned winner, as the Brewers were the first to clinch on September 15. San Diego lost a chance to gain on both the Cubs and Phillies. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, the Guardians notched a big win over the White Sox.
Brewers win the NL Central
The Brewers won 4-1 in Pittsburgh, officially locking up the NL Central title after the club clinched a playoff spot this past weekend.
Luis Lara and Joey Ortiz each drove in two for the Brewers. Brice Turang walked four times for Milwaukee. Jacob Misiorowski struck out seven over five scoreless innings.
It’s the fourth straight season that the Brewers have won the NL Central. Milwaukee remained two games ahead of the Dodgers, who won in Cincinnati, for the top spot in the National League.
Guardians walk it off
The Guardians defeated the White Sox 7-6, moving back to half a game behind Chicago for the AL Central lead.
For the second straight night, the White Sox had a big inning to take the lead late. Down 4-2 in the sixth, Chase Meidroth singled in a run, Randal Grichuk brought one home with a sac fly, and Miguel Vargas scored two with a single.
But in the ninth, Nathaniel Lowe started the inning off with a single. Patrick Bailey walked, which set the stage for Brayan Rocchio to notch a two-run, walk-off base hit to win the game.
Rangers take down Boston
The Rangers won 4-2 to keep pace with the Astros. Houston defeated the Royals, staying one game ahead of Texas.
Jacob deGrom was strong, as he struck out eight over five innings. The lone mistake deGrom made was a two-run shot hit by Nick Sogard in the fifth.
Corey Seager and Elias Diaz each had two-run base hits in the second.
Padres’ winning streak snapped
The Padres’ eight-game winning streak ended on September 15, as the Rockies defeated San Diego 9-3.
All of San Diego’s runs scored were scored via the solo home run. Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Campusano, and Austin Hays all hit home runs in Coors Field.
Ryan Feltner tossed five scoreless innings in bulk relief, piggybacking after Kyle Freeland pitched four innings. Cole Carrigg had two home runs and drove in five.
Orioles win on milestone night
The Orioles defeated the Mets 7-5 in extras, staying three back of the Guardians for the final AL Wild Card spot.
Heading into the ninth, the Mets were up 3-2. But in the ninth inning, Pete Alonso went deep for his first home run at Citi Field as an opposing player. Fittingly, it was also his 300th career home run as an MLB player.
Both teams scored in the 10th, sending it to the 11th. Coby Mayo drove in the winning runs with a three-run, inside-the-park home run.
