The Red Sox were dealt quite an early blow. Curtis Mead, just acquired by the club, may be done for 2026. Meanwhile, several notables bowed out early due to injury on July 28.
Schwarber out
The Phillies did not have DH Kyle Schwarber during the club’s 1-0 loss versus the Marlins on July 28.
It was due to an illness, as Schwarber is dealing with a gastrointestinal issue.
Players leave on 28th
Blue Jays 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. exited on the 28th with hamstring tightness.
Yet again, Byron Buxton is dealing with hip problems. Buxton was removed versus the Royals due to a sore right hip.
Also in that game, Vinnie Pasquantino exited with hand soreness.
Mead has fractured wrist
Red Sox infielder Curtis Mead was placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured wrist. The injury occurred after he was hit by a pitch in Sacramento back on July 27.
Mead, who was in his first game with the Sox since he was traded the previous weekend, will see a specialist to decide whether he will need season-ending surgery.
IL moves
Giants utilityman Casey Schmitt was placed on the 10-day IL with a left knee meniscus tear. As of now, there is no word on whether he will be done for the rest of the year.
Royals pitcher Beck Way was placed on the 15-day IL with back spasms.
Twins pitcher Cole Sands was placed on the 15-day IL with a right elbow strain.
Rehab assignments
The Mets had two rehabbers down in Low-A St. Lucie. Clay Holmes, in what might be his final start with the organization, tossed four scoreless innings (59 pitches) for the Mets. He averaged 93 MPH. Austin Warren also pitched in that game, tossing a scoreless inning.
Orioles pitcher Chris Bassitt struck out three over 3.1 innings (46 pitches) for Triple-A Norfolk. Bassitt, who allowed one run, averaged 92 MPH and topped out at 93 MPH.
Rangers shortstop Corey Seager went 1-2 with a home run for Double-A Frisco.
Adam Frazier and Sebastian Rivero both picked up hits for Low-A Rancho Cucamonga. In Frazier’s case, he hit a solo shot with the Quakes.
Other notes
Pirates outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez did play on the 28th, one day after a hit by pitch.
