Even though one game was rained out, there were still 15 games across MLB on July 28. Cleveland and Cincinnati both picked up wins in the battle of Ohio, while the Tigers picked up a big win behind Troy Melton.
Guards, Reds split doubleheader
The Guardians and Reds split a doubleheader on July 28, necessitated by a rainout the day earlier.
Cleveland jutted out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 in weird circumstances. Kyle Manzardo was originally awarded first with the bases loaded thanks to a called hit by pitch. It was overturned upon review. But afterwards, Manzardo belted a hanging slider out for a grand slam.
However, the Reds scored five unanswered between the third and fourth innings to take the lead. However, a run in the fifth and eighth innings, respectively, pushed Cleveland ahead.
In the second game, Gavin Williams struck out 12 over seven strong innings, allowing only two runs. Williams, though, received the loss after Cleveland’s offense couldn’t muster anything in a 2-0 loss.
Alcantara shuts down Philly
All the Marlins needed was a Kyle Stowers solo home run on July 28, as Miami shut out the Phillies 1-0.
Sandy Alcantara, Calvin Faucher, & Pete Fairbanks did the rest. Alcantara tossed seven scoreless innings to win his 11th game of the year.
Tigers strong behind Melton
The Tigers had at least one run in every single inning on July 28, aside from the ninth. Detroit shut out the Orioles 14-0.
Eduardo Valencia continued his raging hot start to his MLB career, as he hit two more home runs and had four hits for Detroit. Kevin McGonigle also had four hits, Javier Baez had three, and Gleyber Torres picked up two, one of which was a two-run home run off Dean Kremer.
Troy Melton tossed seven scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 1.75.
Yankees win second straight
Thanks to Chase Meidroth‘s ninth home run of the season, things got dicey for the Yankees in Chicago. But the Yankees still picked up a 3-2 win, as David Bednar held on for his 22nd save of the season.
Max Schuemann drove in two, while Jasson Dominguez picked up two hits.
Gerrit Cole tossed six scoreless innings.
D-Backs take extra-inning win
The Diamondbacks and Pirates combined for 30 hits and 15 total runs in a 12-inning victory. But in the end, Arizona picked up a major win against a team looking to catch the D-Backs in the playoff race.
Up 6-3 in the ninth, Paul Sewald was charged with three earned runs over 0.2 IP in a blown save. Sewald allowed a two-run shot to Brandon Lowe, followed by a Bryan Reynolds solo home run.
Arizona and Pittsburgh matched runs in the 10th. A James McCann RBI single in the 12th gave Arizona an 8-7 lead.
