It was a good day for the Yankees, who won & saw their top prospect homer in his big-league debut. As for the Dodgers, not only did the club lose in Tarik Skubal’s debut, the team dropped to the #2 seed in the NL playoff race.
Yankees win in Lombard Jr’s debut
The Yankees tied the season series with the Cardinals, as the club won 2-0 on August 4.
Ryan Weathers was brilliant, as he struck out six over six scoreless innings, limiting the Cardinals to three hits. Three relievers kept the Cards off the board, and David Bednar picked up the save.
Both Yankee runs were off solo home runs. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit his 17th home run of the season in the second, while George Lombard Jr. picked up his first big-league hit via a solo home run in the fifth. The day marked Lombard Jr’s MLB debut, hours after he was officially promoted by the club.
Hunter Dobbins struck out four over 6.1 IP in the game for St. Louis.
Cubs spoil Skubal’s debut
The Dodgers lost 5-1 in Tarik Skubal‘s debut with the club, as the Cubs clinched a series victory before the finale in Wrigley Field on August 5.
Los Angeles was only able to muster four hits off Javier Assad and the Cubs’ bullpen. That lone run came from Kyle Tucker, who hit a solo shot in the second off his old team. It was Tucker’s 10th home run of the year.
Skubal struck out six over six innings, allowing two runs against Chicago. He did allow one home run, courtesy of Dansby Swanson in the third inning.
Brewers first to 70 wins
Thanks to the Dodgers’ loss, the Brewers were able to become the first team to 70 wins this season. Milwaukee defeated the Pirates 4-2.
Logan Henderson was excellent, as he struck out eight over six strong innings. And the offense came through, as Jackson Chourio had three hits, one of which was his 14th home run of the year in the third.
Red Sox blow out White Sox
It was all Red Sox on August 4, as Boston won 14-2 over the White Sox in Fenway Park.
Davis Martin surrendered three home runs and 10 total hits in a start in which he conceded nine runs. Erick Fedde allowed four earned runs (five total) in bulk relief.
As for the Red Sox, the club had 15 total hits, four of which were home runs. Caleb Durbin hit a grand slam, Jarren Duran hit his 19th home run in the seventh, while Wilyer Abreu had two.
Patrick Sandoval went five innings to win his first game of the season.
Orioles win in Rodriguez’s return
Grayson Rodriguez returned to Baltimore for the first time since the trade that sent him to the Angels back in November. And he pitched well, as Rodriguez struck out six over seven innings. But it wasn’t enough, as the Orioles defeated the Angels 3-1 in Baltimore.
Cade Povich struck out seven over six scoreless innings. Pete Alonso drove in two on a single hit in the third, while Tyler O’Neill came off the bench and hit a solo home run off Mitch Farris in the eighth inning.
