The American League Wild Card race took another turn on August 16. Baltimore, a hot team right now, won again against the Rays, moving to 61-63 on the season. And in the process, moving into the third & final Wild Card spot in the league.

Orioles defeat Rays again

The Orioles took their third straight game against the Rays, this one by a score of 10-2.

Baltimore, which will go for a four-game sweep on the 17th, saw Trevor Rogers pick up his eighth win of the season. Rogers struck out six over six innings, lowering his 2026 ERA to 4.15. As for the offense, Colton Cowser had two hits, one of which was his 11th home run. Jackson Holliday also had two hits, while Pete Alonso picked up two RBI to move to 80 total on the season.

With that win, and losses from the Blue Jays and Rangers, the Orioles are now in possession of a Wild Card spot in the American League.

Brewers take three of four from Dodgers

On a day when the Dodgers tallied as many errors as runs scored, the Brewers took advantage. Milwaukee won 6-2, giving the Brew Crew three wins out of four in their series at Dodger Stadium.

It was quite the day for Jake Bauers, who had four hits and got on base five times. Jackson Chourio picked up three hits. And as for the pitching, Logan Henderson struck out six and allowed one earned run over seven innings.

Dodgers starter Tarik Skubal allowed just one earned run and struck out seven over six.

Cameron nearly tosses no-no

Noah Cameron tossed a complete-game shutout against the Royals, allowing just one hit in the game.

Cameron had a no-hitter entering the seventh. But with one out in the inning. Vaughn Grissom broke it up with a jam shot single that went over the head of Bobby Witt Jr.

Michael Massey and Witt Jr. both hit home runs in the Royals’ victory.

Mize shuts down Guardians

After a three-hour rain delay, the Padres ended their three-game series in Cleveland with a 5-0 victory.

Casey Mize pitched well against the Guardians back on May 21, when he was still a member of the Tigers. That day, he allowed just two earned runs and struck out over 6.2 IP. This time around, Mize kept the Guardians fully off the board, as he punched out three over six scoreless innings.

The Padres’ offense hit four home runs on the day. Jase Bowen, Jake Cronenworth, Luis Rengifo, and Gavin Sheets all hit home runs.

White Sox sweep Tigers

Despite Sean Burke not going five against the Tigers, the White Sox were able to chip away at a 4-1 deficit after three, ultimately defeating Detroit 7-5.

Catcher Drew Romo cut the Sox’s deficit to one in the fifth with a two-run shot. Colson Montgomery tied it with a single in the sixth, and Munetaka Murakami‘s two-run home run in the seventh ultimately gave Chicago the game-winning run. Miguel Vargas‘ 28th home run of 2026, a solo shot, came in the ninth.

Rookie Hagen Smith picked up his second career big-league win.
