There’s a lot happening in Pennsylvania right now. Aside from the Phillies, the Little League World Series and the Little League Classic took over Williamsport on August 23. The Phillies won a wild game, putting the onus on the Braves to maintain their now-slimmer lead in the NL East.
Braves win Little League Classic
The Braves salvaged the final game of their three-game series with the Brewers, winning 4-2 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Atlanta took the lead in the second after Mauricio Dubon broke a scoreless tie with a ground-rule double. Milwaukee tied it after Jake Bauers singled in Brice Turang in the third. One inning later, Sean Murphy made it 2-1 with an RBI single. Dubon scored on an error in the sixth, and Michael Harris II made it 4-2 with his 21st home run of the year in the ninth.
Tyler Mahle struck out and allowed just one earned run over five innings.
Phillies score six in ninth
Down 4-0 in the ninth inning, the Phillies looked poised to drop the final game of their series with the Cardinals. Bryce Harper started off the inning with a double. Luis Arraez and Brandon Marsh, though, flied out to give Riley O’Brien one last out to get. However, he never got that out.
After a single from J.T. Realmuto and a walk by Justin Crawford, Edmundo Sosa knocked in three with a bases-loaded double. Bryan De La Cruz tied it with an RBI single.
The next batter, Kyle Schwarber, walked it off with his 39th home run of the season.
Griffin wins 15th game
Foster Griffin allowed two runs over five innings, helping the Guardians win 7-2 in Colorado.
The Guardians didn’t need the long ball to win this one. Five Guardians had multi-hit games, including Chase DeLauter, who had three hits on the day.
With that win, the Guardians are now 65-66 and in control of the third AL Wild Card spot.
Cubs blow out Mariners
The Cubs scored 12 runs between the eighth and ninth innings, giving the club a 19-2 victory over the Mariners.
Chicago chased Mariners starter Bryce Miller after 4.1 IP, in a start where he walked seven and allowed two home runs. One of those home runs was an Ian Happ grand slam, his 22nd home run of the season.
That wasn’t the only grand slam of the game. Pedro Ramirez, who had three hits in the game, hit a home run with the bases loaded in the eighth.
White Sox walk off Mets
The White Sox won 2-1 on August 23, winning the series against the Mets on their second walk-off win in three games.
No team scored a run until the eighth, when Andrew Benintendi drove in Miguel Vargas with an RBI double. The Mets tied it in the ninth after Jared Young hit an RBI double against Grant Taylor.
But in the bottom half of the inning, Tristan Peters hit a solo shot to push the White Sox to their 68th win of the season.
