The Houston Astros have been around for 60 years, dating back to the franchise’s brief time as the Colt 45’s. The Astros have had plenty of stars play in Houston since then, including Joe Morgan, Nolan Ryan, Craig Biggio, and Jose Altuve, just to name a few. But how many World Series titles have been won by the Astros? Here’s an answer to that question.
Houston Astros World Series history
The Houston Astros franchise has won two World Series titles, one in 2017 and the other in 2022.
Prior to 2017, the Houston Astros made the World Series just once. That lone appearance came in 2005, back when the Astros were still in the National League. For reference, Houston was in the National League from the franchise’s first season in 1962 to 2012.
The 2005 Astros were a powerhouse, led by sluggers Lance Berkman and Morgan Ensberg, as well as veterans Craig Biggio, Andy Pettitte, and Roger Clemens. Houston would win 89 games in the regular season, and follow that up with series victories against the Atlanta Braves (NLDS) and St. Louis Cardinals (NLCS). In the 2005 World Series, the Astros would be matched up with the American League champion Chicago White Sox. The Astros, though, were swept by the White Sox in the Fall Classic.
Houston would make it back to the MLB Playoffs in 2015, albeit as a member of the American League. A young core, including the likes of George Springer, Carlos Correa, and Jose Altuve, helped lead Houston back to the Postseason that season, a precursor of things to come. While the Astros would be bounced out by Kansas City in the ALDS, the Astros’ time would come soon.
That time would be in 2017. The 2017 Astros, which featured much of the same team from 2015, would cruise past Boston in the ALDS. Houston would then be matched up with the Yankees, the team the Astros best in the 2015 AL Wild Card game. In a seven-game series that went down to the wire, Houston would come out on top to make it back to the Fall Classic.
Houston matched up with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2017 World Series. Much like with the ALCS, this series would go to seven games. In that seventh game, Houston would win 5-1 to clinch the franchise’s first title.
That title, though, has been a penchant for criticism. This is due to an investigation conducted by Major League Baseball in 2019 that would confirm that the Astros were stealing signs throughout that season.
Houston would make it back to the World Series in 2019, 2021, and 2022. The Astros would lose in 2019 and 2021 but would win its second title in 2022. Houston defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games.
