It was a lighter day of action on June 4, as only nine games were held across MLB on the day. It was a good one for the Phillies, as Zack Wheeler pitched well again to help Philadelphia secure a win over San Diego. Plus, the Cubs and Diamondbacks had comeback wins.
Phillies win as Wheeler flirts with no-no
Zack Wheeler struck out eight for the Phillies, who won 6-4 over the Padres.
Wheeler had a no-hitter entering the sixth, which was broken up by Bryce Johnson that inning. San Diego made it interesting late, as Manny Machado hit a home run in the seventh, and Jackson Merrill tallied a two-run shot in the ninth.
But it wasn’t enough to top the Phillies, a team that had 10 total hits on the day.
Cubs comeback versus A’s
The Cubs came back from a 6-1 deficit to beat the Athletics 7-6.
Chicago entered the bottom of the seventh down 6-1, as Shea Langeliers hit two home runs, and Tyler Soderstrom and Jonah Heim added one of their own. But Ian Happ cut the Athletics’ lead to three with a two-run home run in the seventh.
Then in the ninth, Happ drove in Michael Busch with an RBI double. Happ scored off a Moises Ballesteros single, and Dansby Swanson drove in pinch runner Kevin Alcantara to tie it up.
Pete Crow-Armstrong, who homered earlier in the game, drove in Seiya Suzuki to win the game for the Cubs.
D-Backs walk off Dodgers
The Diamondbacks defeated the Dodgers 3-2 on June 4.
Arizona was down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, as Justin Wrobleski and Kyle Hurt shut down the Diamondbacks for seven innings. But in the eighth, a Corbin Carroll home run and a Geraldo Perdomo RBI single even things up.
And in the ninth, Ketel Marte‘s 11th home run finished out the victory.
The Dodgers had just six hits on the night. Shohei Ohtani did not play.
