Two winters ago, Rhys Hoskins was one of the best free-agent hitters available. But now, things have changed for the former Phillie & Brewer, who reportedly took a Minor League deal to join the Guardians.

Hoskins headed to Cleveland

Per multiple reports, the Guardians have agreed to sign Rhys Hoskins to a Minor League deal.

Hoskins spent the last two seasons with the Brewers after he signed with the team in the 2023-24 winter. The ex-Phillie didn’t perform poorly in his first season, as he hit 26 home runs for the Brewers that year. However, his numbers were somewhat of a far cry from 2022, his last healthy season.

This past year, Hoskins slashed .237/.332/.416 with 12 home runs and 25 extra-base hits with Milwaukee. But like in Philadelphia, Hoskins was squeezed with the Brewers thanks to Andrew Vaughn and a hefty $18MM mutual option that was rejected.

Hoskins will now look to impress this spring for a roster spot. Cleveland does have first baseman depth with Kyle Manzardo and 1B/OF C.J. Kayfus. Manzardo and Kayfus, though, are left-handed hitters, while Hoskins is a right-handed hitter.

Cardinals add infielder

The Cardinals announced on February 21 that the team signed Ramon Urias to a one-year Major League deal for 2026. Per the team, it also comes with a mutual option for 2027.

Urias is a former AL Gold Glove winner at third base. Last season, he posted a +5 OAA in the field. Additionally, there is some power there, as Urias had double-digit home run totals in three of the last four seasons.

The 31-year-old joins a Cardinals team that’ll have a different-looking infield come 2026. Brendan Donovan (Mariners) and Nolan Arenado (Diamondbacks) were traded to new places over the winter.

Other moves

The Padres outrighted outfielder Tirso Ornelas to Triple-A El Paso. Ornelas was designated for assignment several days earlier.
