Several notables were placed on the injured list on July 22, including Bobby Witt Jr. But in good news for Dodgers fans, Shohei Ohtani tossed a bullpen session as he looks to work his way back from his knee trouble.
Ohtani threw bullpen session
Dodgers TWP Shohei Ohtani threw a 31-pitch bullpen session in Philadelphia on July 22.
It’s the first significant step forward for Ohtani since he was scratched from what was supposed to be a scheduled start against the Phillies that day.
Suarez unavailable
The Red Sox indicated on the 21st that Ranger Suarez could be activated on July 22 from the IL. That didn’t happen, although it had nothing to do with his groin.
Instead, Ranger Suarez is dealing with an illness.
IL moves
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was placed on the 10-day IL with low back tightness. Additionally, Kansas City shifted Stephen Kolek to the 60-day IL.
Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo joined Adley Rutschman on the injured list. Basallo was placed on the IL with right shoulder inflammation.
Blue Jays outfielder Jonatan Clase was placed on the 10-day IL with left plantar fasciitis.
Athletics pitcher J.T. Ginn was placed on the 15-day IL with a right middle finger blister.
Rehab assignments
Ronald Acuna Jr. went 2-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored for Triple-A Gwinnett. In that same game, Ha-Seong Kim went 1-4 with a walk and an RBI.
Dodgers reliever Edwin Diaz struck out two over 0.2 IP (19 pitches) and allowed one hit for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Diaz averaged 96 MPH and topped out at 98 MPH.
Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer struck out seven over five scoreless innings (56 pitches) for Triple-A Buffalo. Scherzer averaged 93 MPH and topped out at 94 MPH.
Other notes
Twins catcher Victor Caratini was removed from the team’s contest against the Guardians after he fouled a ball off his knee.
Jac Caglianone (shoulder) was not in the Royals’ starting lineup on July 22. Nor was J.P. Crawford (wrist)
Pirates outfielder Jake Mangum was scratched before the club’s second game with right foot discomfort.
Rangers shortstop Corey Seager, on the IL, ran the bases in Texas on the 22nd.
